Just saw Cinderella last night. What a disaster! Like Clear Day they changed the narrative to the point that it doesn't make any sense. Does anyone not think that O Hammerstein knew what he was doing in the original book? They have grafted a PC narrative to the original that causes important plot points to now make NO SENSE! The songs they added are so much filler and bog down the story. What a tedious production. The lovely score of the numbers that were meant to be in the show still enchants and the casting is good but to no avail with the horrible book.
Agreed. They went in the wrong direction and killed the kid appeal and in our case, the adult appeal, too.
I liked the Clear Day revival.
But, I agree that Cinderella was fine that way it was.
I had issues with Cinderella, but come on! The Clear Day revival was FAR worse. That thing was a mess and a half. A true train wreck. Cinderella may be muddled and boring at times, but On a Clear Day was shocking (plus the set and costumes were hideous to look at).
Wow. Living outside New York now, CINDERELLA had hardly registered on my radar. I just assumed it would be a thoroughly professional, slickly-mounted production of stalwart and charming television musical that would do decent family business. But as dwperkins so aptly puts, from reading the many discussions on this board, this show is turning out to sound like this season's ON A CLEAR DAY...
and you liked the Cinderella costumes? The fairy godmother's gown looks like she it has a wrapped testicle on either side!!
The garish ballgowns of the chorus are absolutely hideous.
Gink, you are obviously a person of great insight and taste!
Oh come on, at least On a Clear Day had Jessie Mueller. Cinderella...yeah, I'll pass.
Cinderella has Victoria Clark and Laura Osnes. Casting is certainly not the problem.
I'll give you Victoria Clark. Osnes I have yet to be impressed by after three shows.

Osnes was terrific in Bonnie and Clyde.
I haven't seen the show and not over NY til June and I can't say I'm so enthused to book to see it... If its still on by the sounds of it!
she was also terrific in South Pacific and Anything Goes
Dr. Perkins. Cinderella, worse than the revival of On A Clear Day? Do you know any psychotherapists?

I'd walk a mile out of the way to miss a Victoria "see how hard I'm acting" Clark performance.

God save us from Laura Osnes fans...

I did not see Clear Day, but I can tell you Cinderella is a charming and entertaining show. I was there during first week of previews and enjoyed it very much. My only complaint was that it needed to be shortened a tad and from what I've heard they did shorten it from when I went.

True. A friend who saw it Friday night clocked it at 2:30 including intermission.
What have they done? Added the entire score of ME AND JULIET?
That would be interesting...
