It will be a revival, just like Assassins and The Normal Heart were revivals. If a work is considered "classic", it's a revival. Cinderella- with half a dozen TV movies using the Rodgers and Hammerstein songs and 50+ years of tours and regional productions- is most definitely a classic. They're not going to change the book of the fairy tale so drastically that it could be considered a different show.
Great casting, though.

Posted: 4/18/12 at 7:39pmExcited for Osnes, never really heard/saw anything from Fontana, so no opinion on him. But I'm most looking forward to the story getting the update where Cinderella rescues the prince, what exactly she's rescuing him from, and how all the songs are going to fit around this new plot.

Posted: 4/18/12 at 7:44pmI'm so glad this is finally seeing the Broadway stage, and I'm also glad that the book is being worked on. I'm sure Laura will be fantastic.

Posted: 4/18/12 at 8:08pmI'm so impressed with the way that Laura Osnes has developed both her talent and her career since she won the reality show. She works hard, is always improving, treats everyone well, is very professional, supports the Broadway community, takes nothing she's gotten for granted. Pure class. Extraordinary talent.

Laura keeps getting work! I'm excited for her!
But how is this considered a revival if it hasn't been performed on Broadway?

Posted: 4/18/12 at 8:25pmdegrassifan, I already posted that answer. The Tony Awards consider classic works revivals. Titus Andronicus has never been performed on Broadway, but Shakespeare won't be receiving a Tony for Best Play if it does.

^ You made very good points earlier.
'Cinderella' is considered a revival since the musical has been around for many years and it has played at the New York City Opera House and Madison Square Garden.
Also, Andrew Llyod Webber's 'The Wizard of Oz' was considered for Best Musical Revival at Laurence Olivier Awards even though some of the material was very new. However, the musical has been performed for many years and had a run at the Barbican Theatre in London in 1987.

orangeskittles, I saw your answer but it still didn't make sense. But thank you and beautywickedlover for explaining it further. I still don't agree it should be considered a revival, but what do I know?
So does that mean that Wizard of Oz would be considered a revival if it came to Broadway even though it has never played on Broadway? Weird!
Thanks again guys!

'The Wizard of Oz' has played many engagements at Madison Square Garden over the years.
Also, the version of 'The Wizard of Oz' that is playing at the London Palladium is actually the first time the show has played in the West End. When show ran in 1987 in London, the Barbican Theatre was not a West End theatre and it still isn't to this day.

Am I really the only person that dislikes this show??
That being said, Osnes will be fine -- but I'd like to see her do something new ( but better than Bonnie & Clyde. )

Laura Osnes and Ashley Spencer both came from the Reality Show (Grease You're the One That I Want)world! They have both proven what good actresses they are and why they were both chosen first and second place on that show ! They have both been on Broadway since that show! Kathleen Marshall and David Ian both did a great job at recognizing both of their amazing talent! Their vocal and acting skills are outstanding! Let's just all accept the fact that these two ladies proved the naysayers wrong and that the two BEST ladies from that show are doing so well in New York City! Congrats to Laura for Cinderella. Perfect casting! I, for one, really enjoyed "Grease You're the One That I Want," and would love to see another show like it, even though I may be in the minority.

I have to imagine they'll get a "Name" for the Fairy Godmother. I saw the tour with Eartha Kitt at MSG and cannot wait for this. And I'm looking forward to hearing who else will be joining those already announced.
They have both been on Broadway since that show!
While both Laura & Ashley have found success on Broadway they haven't been on Broadway since the show ended. Ashley did a lot of work in Pittsburgh ("LesMiz", "Producers", "Curtains"). They both seem to be finding steady work since the show but not all of it has been on Broadway. And while we're bringing it up let's not forget Kate Rockwell who made a great Elle in "Legally Blonde" and was in "Hair" after that or Chad Doreck who I enjoyed in "Altar Boyz".

Posted: 4/19/12 at 1:02pmYes, Ashley Spencer has been in three Broadway shows. Hairspray, Grease and Priscilla and has done lots of regional work. And, Eris, thanks for reminding us about the other "Grease" Contestants. I had forgotten.

Posted: 4/19/12 at 1:32pmI really liked the last tour with Eartha Kitt and that version of the book was my favorite so far. I thought the entire opening sequence with the somewhat haunting overture, the beautifully written prologue and the bit of "There's Music in You" that Eartha sang was brilliant so I'm a little bummed that it's being deemed "not good enough" and that Douglas seems to be writing a completely new adaptation. I'm not sure I'd want to see it. I have thought about actresses that I'd like to see as the Fairy Godmother and Vanessa Williams is usually at the top of my list. If they're looking for a "name" I hope she is considered.
