I'm listening to it now, I don't get the hate, I think it's a very good production, not difinitive, but it definately stands out (for both good not so good things) and trumps the 95 Roundabout recording which is bleh.
The accent on the Marta and Amy (and the slow place of Married Today) kinda ruins the songs. But it's much more vicious than the others, which really works, you feel like these people are just suffocating the f*ck out of this guy, especially in Poor Baby and the opening number (which I believe to be the most powerful, hightened, energetic version around).
Edit: Also...I can't stand the April's overused vibrato

Who says its hated?
I think its amazing and saw the show at the Donmar and on its transfer to the Albery.
I had mixed feelings about this production when I saw it and would certainly agree with those who found it unfocussed as to whether it was set in the 70s or the present. But then I was also rather unfocussed cos I had a bad-contact lens day and had left my specs at the hotel.
I didn't particularly like Adrian Lester on the recording but I did see him make a guest star appearamce at the 30th anniversary production of Side by Side by Sondheim a couple of years ago and his voice had matured so much that it was a completely different take on Being Alive - much less little-boy-lost and much more adult-making-emotional-breakthrough. He received a rapturous reception for it though.
I also try to avoid filmed versions of stage productions as the close scrutiny of a camera is unfair on actors who have been directed and are performing for an audience much further away.

Hated? What are you talking about? It was a brilliant and brilliantly received production that showed up the recent Doyle travesty for the abysmal kindergarten pageant it really was.
