Is it worth it??
I heard it's A LOT darker than the usual COMPANY.
I want to hear another COMPANY with the original orchestrations though. They are quite wonderful, with all the strings. The reduced down orchestrations aren't as good.
I'm assuming the Philharmonic production next year will be using the original orchestrations. That will be great. I can't imagine how reduced they will sound for the Doyle production!
So any thoughts on the 96 London Revival Recording? Is it worth owning?

Do you have the OBC? It's so... trippy.
If you've got the OBC and the 1995 revival already, I say buy it. Company's just about my favorite score, so I think the London revival is really interesting, but definitely not for anyone. It's darker (and sometimes, in an effort to remain "dark", comes off as somewhat melodramatic, if you ask me) and the sound takes a little getting used to, but if you're a Company fan, it's an interesting point of comparison.
A lot of the cast is awful, though. Sheila Gish is... not my favorite person in the world, no. I mean, no one is Elaine Stritch, but at least Debra Monk didn't completely butcher the vocals on "The Little Things You Do Together" and "The Ladies Who Lunch"--she just sort of missed the point of the character. Sheila Gish, on the other hand, I don't know what she's doing. The rest of the cast I can take or leave--Adrian Lester I like, actually, he's better than Boyd Gaines at least (and I'm not sure where you fall on the Dean Jones like-dislike spectrum).
I don't know. I think it's worth owning as something different.

I say if you can get it cheap, get it...If you have to pay an arm and a leg for it...It's not worth it...
Where on earth is someone going to have to pay and arm and leg for the company revival recording? Mars?
Really, don't buy it. It's expensive and pretty damn awful.
I got it for pretty cheap, but that was years ago. I'd get the original first, but if you already have, I'd say this is worth having. Like others have said, interesting for comparison. I actually really really like Adrien Lester in the role; I can't say the same for the rest of the cast, but Lester was good.
While this recording isn't the definite recording (which is definately the OBCR) Adrian Lester is IMO the best Bobby on recording. Other than that and the acoustic opening to the show, this CD is really a let down, especially Sheila Gish as Joanne.
