Getting the nomination isn't the hardest part of the process in any awards show just ask Scorsese, or the producers of Cold Mountain or Gangs of New York.
Oh for crying out loud Cry Baby got the spot the same way Grease got the spot.Cry Baby got zero raves so please dont make out like it did.
And the people saying the closing notice was posted during previews could have been right.Sometimes producers will post it as a precaution.A show i did in the UK had its closing notice posted during previews as the audience just were not showing up, luckily the reviews were OK and bookings started to come in, the notice came down.......only to go up 3 weeks later lol
for the first time, I agree with everything in your post songanddance.
it's true... Closing Notices can get posted. doesn't mean the show closes.
CRY-BABY only got one "rave", I believe. but I don't think so. can someone go back and check the CB review thread?
Are we really going to talk about "trash" on Broadway and leave Young Frankenstein and The Little Mermaid out of it? Those train-wrecks are just as miserable.
at least TLM is a disney musical... it might be trash but the little kids who see it don't think so.
CRY-BABY is not aimed for little kids, so it actually matters. it's trash. garbage. crap.
that's my opinion at least

I just looked up the reviews again. Thought I remembered some raves. The New York Times hated it and Variety was fairly negative BUT Wall Street Jounral gave CRY-BABY a rave. As did Newsday and WOR radio.
WOR radio is a local radio station. seriously?
the Wall Street Journal also gave "In My Life" a rave review. also "Lestat" I believe.
let's just end this here... it got a positive (NOT rave) review from Newsday. that's about it
I enjoyed Mermaid. I can't compare it to the other shows because I haven't seen them yet and now probably won't due to the cancellation of my spring trip to NYC.
TooDarnHot-
I'm with you on Cry Baby. I just think we've been given a terribly unfortunate batch of new musicals between Cry Baby, Young Frankenstein, and The Little Mermaid. I just wanted to note that they'll all trash, stinking up Broadway, not just the one. I respect your opinion on TLM and its appeal to kids, but I have a lot of resentment for Disney Theatrical's failure to make this show something special. It would have been so easy. But I digress.
Anyway, that fourth slot had to be filled, but it should have gone to "A Catered Affair", IMO.

oh yeah TooDarnHot we agreed on something *puts on leg warmers and does a dance*
Hell! if GLORY DAYS did not close..it probably would get nominated too!
***scratches head******
These nominations are just like you have list of shows of who p*ssed who? If you p*ssed someone... youre crossed out! lol!

Higgins - I agree with you. I resent disney theatricals for many decisions and choices they make, as well. but I was just saying that the "standards" should be different for TLM since it's aimed for children. it is a bad season of musicals... you're right. but it could be worse
songanddance -
You act like it has a shot in hell of winning anything it's nominated for.
It doesn't...besides possibly choreography but I doubt winning the BEST CHOREOGRAPHY Tony is going to start selling tickets for this mess.
TooDarnHot-
Absolutely. And fortunately, we've been given some amazing musical revivals this season.
(nice pic. =) )
I would wear them leg warmers soooooooo much better
higgins - most notably, SOUTH PACIFIC and SITPWG (pure brilliance).
wickedrocks - CRY-BABY should not win. IN THE HEIGHTS should win Best Choreography
Noel&Cole,
You make it sound like CryBaby is a special olympics athlete or a civil rights activist. I would hardly qualify making it through mixed reviews as an arduous task. Every show deals with detractors, big deal.
I'm happy for them, but you do sound a bit shilly. (Shilly? Is that a word? Oh well, doesn't matter.)

I agree, and think HEIGHTS will win choreography but it is CRY-BABY's best shot at a win, without a doubt.

well... my opinion is that only 2 shows deserved to be nominated: In the Heights and Xanadu. I hated Passing Strange more than almost any show I've ever seen, but lots of people loved it (including most reviewers). Cry-Baby was so-so. I wouldn't have nominated it mostly becuase the 2 leads had zero chemistry, which killed the show for me. But there were some good moments, particulary the choreography and Alli Mauzey's charming performance. I disliked A Catered Affair, and believed it should not have been musicalized. Just opinions...
so you hated PASSING STRANGE and dislike ACA, but thought CRY BABY was "so-so"?
wow...
Why is the title of this thread makes me think of MARIAH SCAREY singing " I can make it through the rain!!!" lol
