The tale of Americas most notorious disruptors begins anew as the star-studded Off-Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim and John Weidmans Assassins starts performances November 2 at Classic Stage Company. An opening night is set for November 14.
The production was originally slated to begin in April 2020 but was halted just two weeks into rehearsal due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yeah, they sold out the day they went on sale a few weeks ago, though CSC released additional seats last week (which then sold out), so maybe it could happen again.
If anyone doesn't know, TodayTix is also doing a $15 lottery. It's open for entries until 3pm everyday.
First off, with having seen Caroline, or Change recently and now Assassins this evening, it feels like 2004 all over again. I can even go see Wicked if I wanted to!
Anyway, the set is very bare bones with the exception of some chairs (a John Doyle favorite!), and some prison/convict costumes. The individual performances themselves are wonderful, but the direction to me felt almost nonexistent. Didn’t really understand what he was going for or what his vision was. It’s not some crazy, new inventive take , nor is it super traditional either. Standouts were the gun song, ballad of guiteau (best of the night), ballad of booth, another national anthem.

What is the run time? I didn’t see it on the website (I might have missed it when I checked).

Hmm, if anything, added (as I “spoiled” above). It seems like they’re using the 2004 version.
There are some new-ish orchestrations due to the instrumentation (some ensemble members were playing instruments. IN A DOYLE PRODUCTION?!?!? SHOCKED!). Certain moments sounded full, others sounded a bit ..tinny or lacking? It was …interesting hearing ballad of booth being played on an acoustic guitar instead of a banjo. Another national anthem and Ballad of Guiteau sounded fantastic. It also is half mic-ed half not, so the sound balance was uneven. I would have missed a lot of the lyrics if I didn’t know the score by heart.

I would suggest sitting higher up, I was in the front row last night (loved it) and missed a scene and a handful of other moments being blocked by other actors onstage.
