Cabaret understudy

I have a trip booked to NYC next Wednesday (11/12) and one of my main reasons for going was to see Alan Cumming in Cabaret. Just my luck, he's off that week!

I had yet to buy show tickets, and now I'm wondering if I should go ahead and see it anyway, or try for a different show. Does anyone know who will be filling in for Alan, and have any reviews/feedback?

Cabaret is an wonderful show, so you probably love it either way! That being said there is only one Alan Cumming. I saw Leeds his understudy in March which his first time on, he was good not amazing but not terrible! I also saw in Alan in July but if your in NYC then I would go ahead and see even Alan isn't in but if your in for more than 1 week then you can try to reschedule!

Thank you! I have seen Cabaret before, it's one of my favorites....but never with Alan, and I don't get many chances to go to Broadway, so I want to make them count. We're only in town for one night, but I can (and will) try to make it down to see him before March, no matter what we end up doing on this trip.

Leeds Hill wil be filling in. You will get to see Emma's first week, though!

Now, I haven't seen Leeds Hill's performance of the Emcee, but honestly Alan Cumming is the character. From the moment the show begins to the end, HE pulls you into the Kit Kat Club and then pulls you right out. I saw the show two months ago and it has still stuck with me today. I would wait to see Alan Cumming, because that is a true legendary performance.

I'm also going next week and I'm very disheartened to hear Alan won't be there. Where do you guys find the performers off week schedules like this?

However it wasn't always there, if you bought your tickets before he knew he would be book touring.

Amen to the praise for Alan Cumming. Bfreak says it well. Cabaret is one of my favorite shows too and I was lucky enough to have seen the original production and Joel Grey and Norbert Leo Butz in the revisionist revival when it played LA., but none can touch what Cumming brings to the Cabaret. He owns it.

I know this is going to sound silly, but does anybody know what Emma Stone's commitment is on Tuesday night that she will be out of the show? I have tickets for Wednesday night (for my second time, but first time seeing her) and I am afraid that this is an out of town thing and she may be out the next day as well. Thank you!

ethan231h, I sincerely appreciate your response, but that wasn't exactly the question I asked. What I asked was was if anyone knew Emma's commitment tommorow night, and what the probability is that she would be back in the show Wednesday night as I really want to see her and Alan. Thank you very much, though! x

This is my favorite production of all-time. I'll never find the right words for how much I love it. Alan is magnificent, no doubt, but the production is more than its lead actor, and it will be tremendous and worth seeing with or without him. It'll be a bummer to miss him, certainly, but if your options are to see a masterpiece without him now or not to see it at all, the choice seems clear. Go.

Thank you so much guys, and I got good news. The first time I saw it was in September and when I went I saw Alan Cumming, Burnstein, AND Emond. They were all phenomenal, and Alan's performance stuck with me for so long that I just had to come see the show again. But, I also LOVE Emma Stone and would be crushed if she was absent when I see it, especially seeing the rave reviews she has recieved for her performances. I will let everyone know how I made out.

Roundabout says she will be out tomorrow but says nothing about Wednesday, so you should be fine. :)

I believe the Oscar nominees luncheon was today in LA. I'm guessing Emma Stone doesn't do well with lengthy trips, because she is missing more shows than absolutely necessary. For example, she missed the Saturday evening performance for the Golden Globes the next day, while Alan Cumming and Jake Gyllenhaal performed that Saturday night and still got to the Golden Globes just fine.

I think it's pretty safe that she'll be in on Wednesday night, unless she's sick.

Thanks guys that makes me feel a bit better. My guess is that they prescheduled her absence so that instead of advertising her as being in the show, they wouldn't have to disappoint a thousand people (or some of them at least) when they got to the theatre since she's recently been out the night she was scheduled to return from an event (the golden globes, etc.) I think the reason she is out a lot is because of her voice that can go sometimes, and because she isn't as accustomed to the grueling stage schedule like Alan and Jake are (especially Alan, I don't even know how he did Macbeth 8 times a week!) I will let you guys know how I made out.

She was out last Wednesday for both performances. When I inquired at the box office, they said she's "still sick" which leads me to believe she also missed Tuesday's show last week. They were offering refunds depending on how tickets were purchased but we stayed anyway, of course. Andrea Goss was on and did a phenomenal job, along with everyone else, but we were still pretty bummed!

Emma was actually in last Tuesday's performance. I had tickets for that night, but was worried she wouldn't get back from the SAG awards in time due to the storm. Thank God she did. Loved her performance. Then I heard she missed both Wednesday performances. So glad I saw her and Alan is as good as ever.

According to a cast member, Emma will now "almost certainly" be back in time for the show tonight, even though she's been scheduled to be out for weeks. Unless she suddenly becomes sick, it sounds like there is no danger of her being out tomorrow.

Enjoy, bfreak! I saw Cabaret with Michelle Williams for the first time in July, but had to go back for Emma as I love her too! Saw her a couple of weeks ago, and she was fantastic. She didn't stop to chat or sign after though, as it was a Sat matinee, so I hope you get to meet/greet her afterwards. I think I may pop over one night before her run is up in hopes to get her to sign my Playbill and take a photo or two.

Anyway, I think you'll be very happy with her performance.

Thank you also rlb237! I also saw it with Michelle Williams and loved it (I thought she was much better than people said she was), but between Alan's performance's impact on me, Emma Stone's reviews, and the fact that I already think she is a great actress, I just HAD to see it again! Plus, I was lucky enough to get a great mid-mezzanine seat for only $57 via Broadway week! I will tell you guys how I made out!
