Posted: 8/17/14 at 1:06amI was watching several videos of different Sophie's and I kept wondering if this particular role could be stunt cast and bring in more money for Mamma Mia.

Why couldn't it?
Couldn't ANY role be stunt cast? (I didn't say stunt cast WELL.)

Posted: 8/17/14 at 5:29amSophie only ran for 8 performances- I don't think any sort of stunt casting is going to resurrect this one.

Yeah, as if you saw any one of them. Truth is, it was ten million times better than any of those dogs by Sondheim, Brown, Guettel, La Chiusa, Tesori, et al.
So hail, Sophie, and thank you for the most wonderful of memories.

Posted: 8/17/14 at 7:24amAfter Eight, what pleasure to have you back on the board (and I'm not being fasicious)! What I have been meaning to tell you, preferably in private, but you seem to have disabled your PMs, is that I really genuinely appreciate your insight to productions of shows. I love hearing you tell tales of the original Dolly with Channing (certainly a more perfect musical comedy has never been written!). I love that you seem to have seen every show imaginable - Carrie, to name an infamous one. But most of all, thank you for allowing me to intact with someone that I can disagree with. It would be a very boring world if everybody praised every single note and word Sondheim has written. And yes, I adore Sondheim's work, but that doesn't mean everyone needs to. So I hope we get a chance to interact, even if we do disagree with Sally's obsession with Ben, or Fosca's nature as a character, or even the concept/execution of The Wild Party.

SDP,
Thanks for your kind comments.
To get this thread back on topic, I suppose one could stunt cast the part of Sophie, (and we all knew EXACTLY which Sophie the OP was referring to), but it's such a small part that I wonder if any "name" would want to do it.

I think it would be tough to stunt cast that role if only ofor this reason. According to interviews with a couple Sophies, they really force that character to only sing straight tone and not vibrato. So if they were to stunt cast with a known singer with a recognizable style, they would strip the style away to match their vision.
Of course there are plenty of pop singers who have no idea what vibrato is, so I guess I have undermined my own argument

Posted: 8/17/14 at 12:00pmAre we trying to get Carly Rae Jepsen a second lead role on Broadway in less than a year? Because I fear that's where the logic of this thread is heading.

I have the LP on a cd now
The music was fairly good. Cannot comment on the show as I never saw it. Steve Allen was underestimated in many areas especially song writing
Dissing Sondheim & Brown? In the immortal words of Adele Dazeem - WTF. I do admit not being a fan of the last 3 mentioned.
Good candidate for a Encores staging however.

Posted: 8/17/14 at 2:07pmIn all seriousness, I do think Jepsen would be a very good Sophie. Much more suitable for her voice than Cincerella was.

Posted: 8/17/14 at 7:03pmI mean, I guess it could. But, I don't see the reason for it. This is a show that brings in tourist audiences in droves, and they have never felt the need to do it before. Yes, I know that their numbers have been down slightly after their move to the Broadhurst, but still.
