What history? The only "achievement" they "achieved" is charging more for a ticket than any other show to play previously. There is a finite number of seats/sro spots in a theater. You can fill them every week for years but add one penny to one ticket once and you've broken your own box office record. Whoopeee.

Exactly. When they raise prices again next season that or the next show will break the house record. Ditto for the shown after that. It will only stop when theater prices stop escalating.Good luck on that one.

Well, considering the capitalization of the show was 13 million, and the weekly nut is around 480K, they seem to be doing fairly well in terms of recouping sooner than later.

It's still an achievement that people will buy them at those prices. You can't just simply raise the price and expect people wil pay.

I don't understand the price complaints? Their top price on weekdays is $142 and it's $152 on weekends. Kinky Boots is $157, Matilda is $147, Book of Mormon's PARTIAL view prices are $159...etc etc, i could go on and on. I mean, I understand being annoyed in general about the rising cost of Broadway, but Beautiful is hardly the only show to have tickets at this price point, and actually is hardly the worst offender.

The analogy doesn't work because gasoline, rent and food are necessities. In the specific case of Broadway shows, time and time again people won't pay full-price for shows so the producers release a discount count to increase ticket sales. It is a rare achievement when people will actually pay the high prices (e.g., BOOK OF MORMON; KINKY BOOTS). If breaking gross records was as simple as raising prices then producers would charge $1,000 per ticket and all shows would make a profit.

The means by which they achieved this is not relevant at the moment. The Lion King also broke the box office record at the New Amsterdam in its first week, but that is because the theatre was closed for like 80 years before then, but it still broke the record.

What do you mean, NewSynchohpation? This theater hasn't been dark for years. Whether it's an amazing achievement or not, they broke Anything Goes' record, set within the past three years. Assuming all their facts are correct, this means it also beat the highest week of sales for Trip to Bountiful as well.

And when you are talking about House Records, you are really only talking about the last 5 years anyway. Ticket prices years ago are nothing compared to today. The age of the theatre doesn't matter.
