Posted: 8/17/04 at 12:56amIt could very well be true considering the RNC is predicted to cause New York City to lose a lot of money in tourism. That means nobody is going to see shows because of the difficulty of getting to Manhattan, which in turn causes shows to lose money. I'm sure a show like "Caroline" or "Frozen", which isn't doing well financially, would just lose tons more money if it was to remain running during the RNC. That's probably why it posted a closing notice.

If it is closing due to the RNC, then I'm sure it is simply a loss in tourism decision and nothing to do with the subject matter.
P.S. Though I'm not one, I don't think it's fair to say that this is a reason to hate republicans. Statements like that only show YOUR ignorance.

Out of curiousity, did the DNC have the same effect on Boston's tourism?

My friend told me tonight that the RNC is pretty much closing down New York. Apparently, they're going to be doing full searches of cars and it will take an insanely long amount of time to get into the city...let alone get to a show. So any show that's doing poorly now will really suffer during the RNC because people will be even less inclined to get tickets, which is a real shame since I wanted to see Caroline soooo badly. Though, I gotta say, shutting down most of the theatre economy is an excellent way to get New York votes, Dubya-My-Boy! Congrats on the excellent work!

Ugh. The Republican National Convention is like ripping off a BandAid. They should just do it really quickly and get it over with.

Posted: 8/17/04 at 7:40amI'm from the Boston area and the DNC really didn't have any effect except that our major highway was blocked off for the duration of the convention and we had to go really far out of the way to get north or south of the city...but other than an influx of agressive Massachusetts drivers in a more "calm" area, I don't think it created a problem.

I read something that indicated that the DNC was really tough for businesses in the area. Any decision tying the closing of Caroline to the RNC has to be due to loss of tourism (and that's what an article I read said).
If you look at the recent grosses, I think it's simply that Caroline is not doing well enough to stay open much longer, and that week is just going to be so bad that they've probably decided they don't need to lose that much money.
I think a lot of shows are going to have trouble that week.

Posted: 8/17/04 at 9:20amIt's probably closing due to lack of ticket sales. It is the end of the tourist season and advance drops sharply in September.

1-See above copy change.
2-Shows close because there isn't enough money in the till or it is a limited run or an irreplaceable star's contract is up.
Shows don't close because a bunch of politicos from any party are showing up.

"the closing or 'drop' in tourism willnot make a show's fate sealed.... "
Uh, yeah it does. Who do you think buys the majority of the tickets? TOURISTS! Why do you think so many shows close during January and February? Tourism is at an all-time low due to the end of holidays and the weather.

But Matt,
I think we need to point out that the drop in tourism is not actually about the RNC, but about September, a horror of a month for struggling shows.
Four days wouldn't make a huge difference. The month of September does.

Feb. and Sept. do happen to be the slowest monthe for Broadway and toursism as a whole anywhere.

When the DNC had their convention in New York in 1992, it did cause a dip in ticket sales. Part of the problem is that a lot of New Yorkers flee the city during these conventions and the thousands of conventioneers who come into town simply don't have the time to see a lot of shows. The delegates, party officials, journalists etc... will be cooped up in Madison Square Garden listening to speeches and having meetings everyday from roughly noon until 11pm so they're not out seeing shows and spending money. Add to that the fact that a lot of potential tourists will avoid New York that week fearing traffic jams, protest marches, security headaches and the threat of terrorist action.
Because of all of that, I would bet that just about every show is going to see at least a small drop in ticket sales for the week with the shows that are already struggling taking a really significant hit.

Ack! It's not a matter of "approval," bwayguy. It's just that some shows were both inoffensive and able and willing to sell giant blocks of discounted tickets to the Republicans. Think of them as a big tour group out of stereotypical Middle America. Only a few shows could accomodate them.
If they want to go to The Boy From Oz, I am My Own Wife, Frozen, or any other show that might have ideas offensive to conservatives, they can. No one's stopping them.
But the only businesses that will probably benefit from the convention are hotels and strip clubs.

Enjoy the republicans, New Yorkers. Here in DC we've had too many of them for the last 4 years!! If I could get a hotel room I'd be happy to come to town and see some shows then. When I was at Avenue Q I happened to see a low level Bush administration official in the audience - and I have been itching to ask him how he liked it!
If there is any truth to any show closing because of anticipated dips in sales, it really is a shame. I get so annoyed here in DC when political rallies and demonstrations shut down streets so I can't get to the grocery store or to work!
