What if she woke up with this? Who goes on? How does a network deal with this?

They'd pump her with anti-inflammatories and an asprin and call it a day. You can certainly sing through the first day of the flu, and who the hell cares if anybody else catches it. They'll all only be singing through the show once anyways.

But if, God forbid, anything catastrophic happened between now and the point that this goes to air, I recall reading here the mention of understudies.

ETA: And Meron and Zedan completely contradicted the understudy thing, as posted up thread. I guess the only other options are to suit up Laura Benanti or stop the whole ship. Updated On: 12/5/13 at 11:13 AM

They go dark and NBC shows a test pattern for 3 hours.

Or better yet, Paul Rudd and One Direction are in town for SNL on Saturday. They can take over and this can be a practice run for Saturday. Now which member of One Direction would make the best Maria?

I wonder what really would happen if Carrie couldn't perform for some reason, since she has no understudy. Cancel, or would they "roll tape"? I'll bet they do have the dress rehearsal taped (if not several run throughs), and I'll bet they would switch to tape if something really bad happened live. At least, that would be my "Plan B." And I'll bet they have a slight delay as well, as do almost all "live" broadcasts.

Realistically, if someone did end up with the flu, they can always lip-synch to the pre-recorded tracks.

EVERY TV show used to be live...for several decades. live plays on TV used to be something you could see at least once a week. Either the star will pull it together and go on, or someone will step in or they'll replace it with a repeat of something else and reschedule it.

I'm sure the producers have Lenora Nemetz on speed dial. The dancing may lean more toward Fosse than the typical R&H shows, but it will all work out.

I hope Carrie doesn't suffer from GERD. It could be quite rough going during Lonely Goatherd if she does.
