Tony Winning Best Musical "Contact" is a soundtrack "Contact (Music from the Broadway Show)"
I cringe when people call cast recordings soundtracks, but I suspect that the only really important negative outcome of doing so is causing us frustration. It really doesn't matter. I can potentially buy the confusion argument but even this doesn't really cause any significant negative outcomes.
I'm happy to admit defeat in this battle, it isn't worth it.
What is the name for it if it hasn't been recorded yet?
Usually, a "concept" or "studio" recording. But these are all social constructs invented by white men, so all musical theatre is racist. Plays can't be racist because they are not musicals.
haha, so when I walk out of a show that i liked, I say that I really loved the musical concept or studio recording?
I was thinking in reverse. If it's been recorded, but not produced on stage yet. If it's been produced, but not recorded, then you like the score, if you're only referring to the music. Just be sure to repress an inferior culture on your way out.
hahahaha, but Matt, I'm asking what the correct word is when it has not yet been recorded. Like right after you saw the show.
Some people hear score and are confused because they think of it only as an instrumental movie score.
Thanks Sammy and Mr. Nowak!
They're both stupid terms. You're not buying the movie soundtrack, you're buying the music track. And a cast album/recording is more than just the cast, it's also the orchestra. It's obviously a shortening of "Original Broadway Cast Album," but without the "Original Broadway" part, it doesn't make much sense.
I just say "album."

Colbert called it a soundtrack RIGHT IN FRONT OF Lin-Manuel. Nobody's heads exploded and the world went round.
Give it up. The war is lost.

Well obviously there's an orchestra, but usually the focus of a cast recording (which is what I prefer to call them) is usually the cast singing the songs from the show, not the orchestra playing the accompaniment.

But the last time he referred to it, he almost over-annunciated CAST ALBUM like a repentant sinner (as he is a musicals lover). It is SUCH A COMPLEX ISSUE, guys.
I guess to each their own, and I say this as someone who generally says cast album out of habit, but this just strikes me as such a strange hill to want to die on.
I don't know why someone would choose to be wrong.
YES, LizzieCurry is so accurate. I was just thinking: sure, maybe you don't want to die on this hill, but why do you want people to just sit around and be wrong all the time? Why do they want to be wrong?

Pop singers are the focus of their albums, but no one calls them "singer recordings." Because that would be stupid.

I prefer to take the non aggressive stance of simply judging harsh people who use soundtrack.
I won't waste time trying to correct them but they are still wrong.
I agree with Mr. Nowack. Those who choose to call a cast album or a cast recording a soundtrack, by all means do so. I wont bother correcting anyone for doing so again....but you're still wrong for doing so.
Ok, so it's not the correct word, but it's such a small thing that I don't feel the need to take time correcting people. It just seems overly nit-picky.

Maybe somebody should start a change.whatever petition for iTunes, because they really set the terms for the discussion with their SOUNDTRACK category.

It would be funny if someone started a petition on White House website and got enougfh signatures for President to respond!

iTunes can't even tag their artists category correctly, you expect them to correctly tag their genre category. Really? Bwahahahahaha!!

tough

All pronounced differently. Sometimes these things just happen.
