i think i'd like Stephanie Block as Mary although her voice is a little heavy for it...

If they must cast one of the aforementioned stars, I wouldn't at all mind Kate Winslet, who can sing AND dance.

I am all for Marla Schaffel as Jane Eyre. Say what you will about Americans doing accents, that lady makes for a flawless British governess. Those of you who actually saw Jane Eyre (yeah, I'm talking to all ten of you, including myself, heh) know what I mean.

Quick Question:
I have heard the British ASCAP does not like sending British Actors to America to do shows unless their is a specific reason, and therefore Laura Michelle Kelly would not likely be able to play Mary Poppins in the Broadway incarnation. However wasn't Laura already on Broadway in Fiddler on the Roof? Somehow that doesnt make sense. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I think it's more a case that American Equity don't allow Brits to come to Broadway so easily. It's all moot in Laura Michelle's case as she is definitely not doing the show on Broadway. Gavin Lee is, as far as I know, still with the show in London and is signed on until September of 2006, so if both sides agreed to it, it's feasible that Gavin Lee could be in the show on Broadway.

Kelly did Fiddler here because of a special exchange with Equity. Just because she was allowed to come over here once doesn't mean she'd be allowed back automatically. The producers of Mary Poppins would have to petition and argue that she is either A) a star or B) the only person qualified for the role. I don't see either happening. Likewise with Gavin Lee. I don't believe he fits either criteria.

I really really really think Marla Schaffel is by far the best choice of American actresses to do it. Did any one see her do My Fair Lady or Sound of Music...she's got the Julie Andrews thing down pretty well, all while making it completely her own. I was a little under-wellmed by Sarah Michelle Kelly. She was good, but just not magical or world weary. This woman needs to have the mishivious sparkle in her eye and know what makes the world go round...
Marla Schaffel is practically perfect :)
As for Bert...John Tartaglia or Tom D'Angora would be adorable. Goofy, charming, likeable, great comedians, and you'd believe that they would be part of this magical world.
That was my biggest problem with the London cast...with all the theater magic surrounding them I felt they were simply normal people standing on that stage...and thats what didn't work for me. I hope they cast really spectacular actors here who won't rely on the stage magic to create their characters for them.
Marla Schaffel, John Tartaglia/Tom D'Angora...my votes :)

I like the idea of Sarah Uriarte Berry, too, but her voice is so rich that I don't think it would work for the character, whose voice is a lot brighter.
I'd like to see Leah Hocking as Mrs. Banks, just because her voice reminds me very very slightly of Lindsey Hateley--it has very distinct character.

Bet they bring Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee over to open the show. Saw them in London. Lee was spectacular.

I second Jennifer Laura Thompson. But only because Erin Dilly has more important things to tend to.

Judging from what other people have said about Laura Michelle Kelly and Gavin Lee tending to other projects and from the EPA audition notice, it doesn't look like they will be brought over, jim, hence this thread. I wish they were assuming their roles here, but alas...

In this quarter's Show People Alan Cumming says he was in negotiations for Mary Poppins in London but things didn't work out. He said hopefully he'll join it here in New York. I'd assume he's talking about playing Bert, which I would be VERY interested to see.

Haviland Stillwell would be perfect as Mary. I saw her in YOU NEVER KNOW in Providence, and I think she used to be Laura Michele Kelly's understudy in Fiddler.

Jennifer Garner as Poppins and Nick Lackey as Bert.
(Nick Lachey is a joke) I think Garner would be wonderful in this role.

She can sing. Well enough for the part? Not extremely sure. Her and Victor Garber sing alot together for charity events.

I love the idea of Mary Poppins as a show, but... Julie Andrews is ingrained in my mind. I'm afraid I'd be disappointed no matter how amazing whoever they cast as Mary would be.
And NOOOO to Sutton Foster. I love her, but... just... no.
They didn't turn Mary into a belting role, did they? I've never heard the recording.
