So I finally saw "Catch Me if You Can." I'm a huge Norbert Leo Butz fan, so I couldn't wait to see this show. I was, unfortunately, extremely disappointed. I actually thought it was quite awful. The music was amateurish (so much so that I knew what the next words would be, since all of the rhymes were really simplistic -- come on!) I thought Norbert and Aaron Tveit were good in the roles given to them, but the show was pretty much of a mess. It just seemed like they were trying to get to every point of the movie (which I missed dearly) and quickly. The dancing, while good, was just thrown in there. Ugh, I really disliked this show.
What happened to the "To Tell the Truth" segments? Were they taken out or did I sleep through them?
Sorry you didn't like it. Seems I'm part of the minority that did like it.
Thanks, steven. I really tried to like it. I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. At least it's a pretty upbeat show so that's one good thing about it.
I'm part of that same minority with you, Steven - I saw it yesterday too, and I LOVED it! Lots of fun and very entertaining.
To me.
I, too, was highly disappointed. I went in WANTING to fall in love with it, but alas, alack....not the case at all. I was often bored and felt little for the characters and wasn't moved at all when the two men finally connected. We saw no NEED for them to reach out for one another -- none.
I appreciate the movie so much more. (And I'd always liked it.)
I felt the same way as some of you: It was a perfectly pleasant, entertaining, mediocre musical, but the whole time, I felt like I would rather be watching the movie. It's not awful, but it's not great.
Seeing it in 2 weeks, I have high hopes! I love so many of the people involved.
I saw the show last Sunday (5/ and I absolutely loved it. No, it wasn't the deepest or most sophisticated show ever, but it was fun to watch. Tveit and Butz are doing fabulous jobs with their roles and they carry the show. I also thought Butler did an amazing job, as did Rachel de Benedet, who is incredibly talented! I thought it was great entertainment.

I just saw the clip of Norbert doing the song about the Rules on TV, but I think he did a fantastic job in that number. He had to sing and act against the cast in that and stand out and he sure did. And he was a good dancer, too. That was not easy to pull off. The lyrics could maybe be a little crisper, sharper, I don't know--one more level up? Music was good; I like the big band jazziness of the sound.
I don't know if I'll see this, but there's a lot on Broadway I haven't seen right now, and a lot to choose from.
