Hiya!
Someone send me this pix: http://www.hunkydesktop.co.uk/code/cool.cgi?celebid=zeta29;celebname=Catherine%20Zeta-Jones;logid=ze;size=1
Do you think this look like a promo pix of the stage version of the show? I think with the expression and most importantly the dress, it could fool someone that CZJ has been in the show be4!!!
My CHICAGO the musical group!!!
Did anyone else not like Catherane as Velma? I just thought it was so funny how there was no Bob Fosse dancing in this movie and all the dancing was dumbed down from what it was in the show for people who can't dance. That dance at the end with her an Rene Zellweger was not even dancing but choreographed movement. lol oh well.
Chicago doesn't have to be Fosse, that's just what we're used to. And it was all dumbed down because Renee can't dance!
Bronx, you are treading on dangerous ground here.
I thought Catherine was a GREAT Velma and she was a dancer and singer in the UK before she was ever known here, so it wasn't her that the dancing was changed for. And besides, who cares. Her "I Can't Do It Alone" was FANTASTICO!!! And she was muy HOT by the way.
She was the best part of the movie and deserved every ounce of that Oscar!
Amen, Munk. PREACH ON PREACHAH!!!!
In total agreement with Munk on this one.
I agree with Munk too. She was amahzing.
I don't like her voice or anyone's voice in that movie.
Well, you also think Dracula is an amazing show and question why George Hearn would recieve applause - clearly your opinion on this board matters to no one anymore.
Munksutrap is just a pissed off person. Anyone who thinks it's posible for their personal taste to be supirior to others' is a dictator.
Did you miss the part in elementary school when they teach you how to spell? Or haven't you reached that point yet?

Catherine as Aurora/Spider Woman on stage NEEDS to happen (with Hal Prince and Rob Marshall's staging of course)

BWAHAHAHA!!!
Wasn't Renee a trained dancer? Or was she just a cheerleader in high school?

Ok, I'll admitt that Catherine was definatly the best part of the movie. Well, her and Queen Latifiah. Rene, IMO, was god awful. I mean...I have no earthly idea where that casting came from. And Richard as Billy? Don't EVEN get me started! All in all, I thought the movie was ok...I really didn't like how they un-fosse-d it...I know it doesn't HAVE to be Fosse...but come on people, Chicago just is Fosse. I was really mad at the movie for that. You can't just strip of show of Fosse.
But Catherine? Two thumbs up!
Muskustrap is just pissed about other threads and it's leaking on to this one. I just type extremely fast. Sorry. You cannot attact me though for not liking Catherine in CHICAGO. That's just stupid and you know it. Updated On: 11/17/04 at 08:49 AM
Catherine Zeta Jones' performance was something akin to pure movie magic. She had a real electromagnetic effect on me; I can remember my friend sitting to the right of me in the theater looking at me and smiling, because for once I appeared to be swept into the world of a film right away (by the astounding success with which this woman disappeared into character). And am I the only one here who absolutely adored Renee Zellweger and Richard Gere's performances? Both Reached for the Gun translated to the screen so well that I thought I was going to go into cardiac arrest watching it. Once the DVD arrived, I played that scene several times a day for at least a month.
This is a great, great film and I can't wait to see what Rob Marshall and Bill Condon do in the future. I only wish that they were involved with the film version of Rent.

Catherine in the movie: Excellent
Queen Latifah: Very good
Renee: workable. Not awful, but left some to be desired
Richard: let's just say he wasnt nominated without reason...
John: perfect in every way
That said, Chicago is one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time.
(all my opinion lol)

I have to say when I first heard C. Zeta-Jones would be playing Velma I thought 'oh my god, the movie is ruined'. But she REALLY blew me away! She was BRILLIANT in every way!
Unfortunately Renee was not.
I was a bit disappointed the choreography was not the Fosse -style, and there were some dance elements taken from the Ann Reinking choreography. Rob Marshall should have done a completely own choreography without 'borrowing' from Reinking.
Well Ann Reinking borrowed from Fosse so if Rob Marshall borrowed from her, then didn't he essentially borrow from Fosse?

I suppose that's true. But at least Ann Reinking did it 'in style of Bob Fosse' and gave credit to BF, whereas Rob Marshall borrowed from Reinking's choreography (and Fosse's) and took the full credit.
good point popcultureboy!
Catherine Zeta-Jones blew me the fvck away in CHICAGO. she deserved that Oscar. it was one of the best musical performances ever put on screen. an amazing singer and she can more than hold her own in the dance department.
and although i like Fosse's choreography i like Marshall's version also. it's always good to see things approached from a different perspective and not have it be the same old thing. i especially liked his version of the "Hot Honey Rag"
and evelyn you are not alone i happened to like all three leads in CHICAGO... i didn't have a problem with anyone in that movie. i happen to think that renee did an amazing job with "Roxie", the song and the character itself
I do not love CHICAGO the musical but I though the "reach for gun" scene was really cool to watch.

Catherine Zeta-Jones started out in musical theater and I think she did a fantastic job in "Chicago".
Also, I think the point of doing remakes and adaptations is to create a different interpretation. So, for people to say that "Chicago" is ruined or worse because of its lack of similarity to the stage production is wrong. Just because it isn't Fosse-fied doesn't mean it's bad. You don't have to LIKE it, but it doesn't mean it is ruined. It is someone else's interpretation. Isn't that the point of art?
