Speaking of a comedienne with a great singing voice, I would absolutely love to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus do either a play or a musical! I actually asked her if she's ever considered doing a show on Broadway in the past during one of her many Gold Derby interviews (it was around the time of the release of Enough Said, as Gandolfini's performance in God of Carnage was mentioned) and she said that she would love to do so, and is waiting for her youngest son to go off to college so she could come to New York. I would be thrilled if this is on the horizon for the next few seasons!
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Tilda Swinton, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Rachel McAdams, Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, and I would love for Bradley Cooper to return.

I mean, yes it is cool to see your favorite celebrities on Broadway, but most of the time they bring celebrities in, it is for financial reasons (i.e It's Only A Play), and then the play or musical sucks. Not saying that is the case for all, but I would much rather watch a super talented unknown actor than a semi talented celebrity.

But most of the responses are famous singers or TV/Movie actors who became successful through their talent.

Which is why I said it's not always the case. I was mainly saying how they bring celebrities to star in crappy shows just so people will come see them. It's Only a Play was a perfect example of this. I also really want other unknown actors to get a chance to shine rathwr than the business side of Broadway take over and just cast the cekebs for money reasons. Idk. I am mixed about celebrities on Broadway. My philosophy is if the show is good and they are perfect, sure. But if you are just bringing them in because you know no one will see it unless the celeb is in it, it just gets annoying.

I don't think the intentions of the producers is to produce a crappy show. I think what you're talking about is true in some cases, like in It's Only a Play, as you mentioned (although most of that cast had a lot of experience working in the theatre, which makes their casting a bit less gimmicky IMO). But I haven't found that to be true in most cases. Even if a show does end up being crappy, it's usually not BECAUSE their celebrity kept them from creating a good work.
RE: you're last statement about casting celebrities because it sells seats: Yes, usually casting a star is the tipping point between a show getting produced, and a show not getting produced. Don't we WANT shows to be able to get produced? Celebrities sell tickets. It would be great if every good show could get produced and be successful without a celebrity, but that's just not where we are now, unfortunately.
Take something like The Cripple of Inishmaan: It had never been on Broadway before, this most recent production probably never would have gotten to Broadway without Daniel Radcliffe's attachment. Radcliffe did a great job and got to play a role he really enjoyed, the show was successful, critics and audiences seemed to enjoy it, and I got introduced to McDonagh, who has since become one of my favorite playwrights. The way I see it, everyone wins.

Would love to see David Duchovny on Broadway. (I saw that Off-B'way play he did at the Lortel several years ago, THE BREAK OF NOON, but that was a very short run.)
