Censorship on TV - American Idiot

I just watched the American Idiot performance of Holiday on Letterman. It caught me off guard when I heard them sing the lyric "Bang bang goes the broken glass and
Kill all the fags that don't agree."

Perhaps I am naive but I would assume that this would be censored on national television...

Or has this word never been censored?

I was amazed that the whole sequence that Theo Stockman sings was included. I'm not sure if it's usually performed, but it was never on the radio.

None -- they'd view it as justifiable homicide, which isn't murder.

I was out of the country a few weeks ago and heard "Money for Nothing" with the "faggot" line in it, which I hadn't heard in years, since it's censored from US radio. As with the AI song, since it's not being used in a derogatory sense and is making fun of the person using the word, it doesn't really bother me either way.

I've always found it odd that the "n" word gets censored, but it's totally acceptable to say f*g. They're both equally degrading and inappropriate in my opinion and if one is censored then the other should be too.
