The PBS series "Character Studies" repeats this Friday night/Saturday morning at 1am. Each episode is a 30 minute in-depth analysis of a famous character in theatrical literature:

1:00 am Ruth (A RAISIN IN THE SUN)
1:30 am Rose (GYPSY)
2:00 am Amanda Wingfeld (THE GLASS MENAGERIE)

I saw the one on Rose Hovick a few months ago and it include interviews and rare live video clips of various actresses who had tackled the role (Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Betty Buckley et al). Definitely worth watching.

I've always felt that Ruth was the strongest character in A Raisin in the Sun, so I'm interested to see what they say about her.

"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe." -John Guare, Landscape of the Body

I watched the Rose one when it first aired, but I was hardly familiar with Gypsy at the time, so hopefully I'll remember to watch it now that I would appreciate it much more.

"If there was a Mount Rushmore for Broadway scores, "West Side Story" would be front and center. It snaps, it crackles it pops! It surges with a roar, its energy and sheer life undiminished by the years" - NYPost reviewer Elisabeth Vincentelli

Ah, damn. I was even up at 1:00 watching TV, and I forgot this!

I hope I'll get another chance to see it, as they sound very intresting.
