Peron's Mistress in EVITA. Kills me every time, even though I know she'll get by -- she always has before.

"Same thing with Sweeney actually"
Really? I feel bad for Sweeney even after he starts killing people. I wouldn't excuse the fact he starts killing people, but he's been alone in prison for 15 years for no reason other than the fact the judge wanted his wife, he found out his wife had died (well, he thought so, anyway), his daughter was being raised by the person who caused his misfortune in the first place. He kinda went off the deep end. Mrs. Lovett, on the other hand, lied to and manipulated him. She's the evil one, in my opinion.

Flower Child,
How about the people he killed? Do you feel sorry for them?

All the characters in Gypsy? By the age of 19 or so (who knows how old she really was!) Gypsy was a huge international star who succeeded (with little or no actual talent) in a very very tough business. I guess if all you know is the first two hours of the show you might think she's miserable but even by the end of the show she is off and running on one of the most fabulous lives EVEF

She was told all her life she was not talented and to stand in the back. Yes, she did go on to great success but she never felt she had her mom's love. Also, she lost a sister in the whole thing. She just wanted to be a normal girl and go to normal school and have a normal family

After Eight:
Yes, I do. I also feel sorry for Tobias, Johanna, Anthony, and Beggar Woman. Like I said, it's not excusing his murders, but I certainly do feel sorry for him.

You need to read Gypsy's autobiography. She certainly didn't see it that way.

Sandy's understudy in Annie, whose only scene in the current revival as far as I could tell was being pushed across the stage in a cage.
Everyone in Next to Normal break my heart, but especially the father. He did everything he could to help his wife and she ends up leaving him.
Also Tobias and Lucy in Sweeney Todd, Amos in Chicago, Paul in A Chorus Line, Sonia in Vanya..., Collins in Rent, Claude in Hair, the religious woman in Hands on a hard body and many more.

I've always felt bad for Sheila in A Chorus Line…. granted, she is a bitch….it's her last shot at making it… and then that look she gives Zach when she exits has always portrayed a feeling of sincere disappointment.

Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors is the reason why I cry at this otherwise campy and amazing show. All she wants is a nice quiet life and instead.... SHE GETS EATEN BY A PLANT...

And I wholeheartedly agree with whomever said they have no sympathy for Sally in CABARET. By the end of the show, I actually can't stand her. That's only in the show. Oddly enough, I don't feel that way about Liza in the film.
Aunt Bella and Grandma in Lost In Yonkers.
Has anyone yet mentioned:
Laura in GLASS MENAGERIE
Catherine in THE HEIRESS
(ETA - if we aren't limiting it to musicals. The title says "shows" - I didn't see the musicals only reference in the opening post until after I read through the thread a second time. So, never mind!)
