i still think bea arthur would make a hysterical madame morrible, despite her age...
No way would she do it, nor should she.
I dont know of she's up to 8 shows a week.
Alma Cuervo = FLIPPIN' Scary after she goes evil.
When she screamed "Wiiiiiiiickeeeeeeed Witch!" during Defying Gravity, I swear my hair stood on end.
WSS, she was doing a solo show, 8 times a week, just five years ago. It's not the effort, it's the role. Would you expect Angela Lansbury to play it?

Mrs. Garrett playing Morrible?!?!? I can just imagine it...that high pitched, squeeky laugh...accidentally calling Elphaba, "Tootie" instead...inserting a life-lesson in between her lines.....
I think Angela Lansbury would have been perfect as Morrible 25 years ago. When I first saw Carole Shelley, she reminded me of Angela.
The raked stage at the Gershwin for WICKED is one of the steepest, scariest I've ever been on. There are a lot of women half Charlotte Rae's age who couldn't handle the physical strains that kind of stage causes.

I know! I'm having a hard enough time believing that they are allowing that "Murder She Wrote" woman on the Broadway stage this season. What's next? Someone casting the Mother Superior from "Sister Act" in a show?
Mrs. Rae really isn't up to doing this sort of thing anymore. She is able to do benifits and help organazations for a couple of days but I know for a fact that she would have trouble with 8 times a week.
Calvin, I better not tell you that my av is of the sidekick from Grace Under Fire. That's right, the sidekick.
I heard they let her on the big stage too. *tsk tsk*
Carole Shelley says that the stage of the Gershwin was giving her back problems and that touring with the show was easier than performing it on the Gershwin.
and Nancy McKeon as Elphaba
and Lisa Welchel as Galinda
and Kim Fields as Chistery
and Mindy Cohn as Nessa Rose

Yes, dfwtheatreguy! NOW I can totally envision the cast. Only, Tootie, I mean "Chistery" has to be on rollerskates, and "Elphaba" would have to ride a Harley instead of a broom. But Lisa Welchel as Glinda...perfect!
Lisa Welchel--who is of the Kirk Cameron and Chuck Norris mindset--would not do a musical that promotes the dark arts to children. Besides, she's too busy stuffing hot sauce down her kids' throats.
But bring in George Clooney as Fiyero, and I'm there.
Poor Mackenzie. He's the Joey Luft of the Astin clan.
