Jyn, was that the Hello Deli?
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

no that wasn't it. I know what your talking about though.
This place was much bigger on the inside. I'm not sure how close it was to Letterman, it may have been a block or two down. But I know it was close (because I rememeber standing by the CBS store door trying to eat it)
When you walk in there was this buffet thing down the middle and then a long bar that had a huge menu on top. You told the cooks which number you wanted and then they'd cook it for right then. Mostly sandwiches. It was quite busy, a lot of people and a lot of food choices inside. So I can't even remember what was on the left side of the store. I'm pretty sure there were coolers where you could grab juices and salads, things like that.

^^^ I hear ya...
You can grab and eat it while walking to the theater... or vice versa while going to the subway (home) ... this is if youre running out of time...I have done it several times. LOL!
Though I have noticed there's more hotdog/pretzel stand on the other side of Broadway by the Avenue of America (from Bryant Park to Radio City Hall)

For one of NYC's best cheeseburgers, go to the Le Parker Meridien's Burger Bar. It's to the right of the entrance off of West 57th b/w 6th and 7th. Fantastic stuff.

my dad loves that burger place. he keeps telling me to go but i haven't gotten a chance.
don't get hot dogs on the street. they are expensive and unsanitary. if you want hot dogs, go to gray's papaya.
i hear that sullivan street bakery is supposed to be fantastic. it's in midtown, but closer to the river 533 w 47th between 10th and 11th).
one of my favorite places is yakitori taisho on st. marks. it's japanese street food..grilled meat on skewers, noodles, etc. it's reasonably priced, and it's a good place to enjoy good food and beer.

I have eaten those hot dogs from the carts for years. They are a wee bit pricy but they are good. As far as unsanitary goes, oh well. There are restaurants that are unsanitary.

There's a Medeterranian cart that hangs out on 46th and 6th that's always in the yearly Vendy awards.

I never buy off the carts after seeing one tip over and they just tossed the hot dogs back in the steamer, after they hit the sidewalk and street.

Ugh...
I once saw the owner of a Chinese restaurant scrap the uneaten steamed rice off a used plate and put it back in the cooker.

Thanks for everyone's help so far. I think the $10 or less mark for each meal is about what I'm looking for. $10 per person, of course.

Dallas BBQ Chicken has always been the starving actor's friend. Now there is one on 42nd Street between 7th & 8th Avenue.

There's a deli next to the Hotel Edison on 47th street that has a salad bar, bagels and sandwiches. Its a good value for a breakfast or lunch on the run.

If you join the the discount club on playbill.com, there a bunch of restaurant coupons you can print out. Not all of them are cheap, but they'll be like 20% meals and stuff like that.
