Matilda does have a proscenium, but I promise you, it is like one you have never seen before, a ingenious design.
blaxx, I stick my head out and say, that the Winter Garden looked that for Cats?
Here is what Matilda looks like at the Cambridge...

That's a different story. The theater was transformed for Cats and quite a few seats/rows removed for that purpose.
Why does it need a celter aisle?
I'm sure if it has to have a centre asile that can easily be done by shinfing around the rows, has happened at some shows before, but I guess the producers would have to see if the want to go through all that fuss.
I;ve never saw cats on Broadway (and I regret not doing so) but from pics I;ve seen and things I;ve read, they basically removed chunks of the proscenium to make it wider and higher so it felt like there was no roof, and everything was painted black and covered with carbage so it was hard to tell where the side boxes were. And unline london they didnt have the revolving stage.
I would think if this was really happening Riedel would be all over it, no?
"Why does it need a celter aisle?"
There is a whole scene where one of the children has to go out into the audience, won't tell you why, but its a pretty awesome tech trick.
I disagree that it needs work. I think the story is beautiful, the show is fun and both children and adults will love it!
^ You have clearly seen Matilda and loved it like me. The song 'School Song' is ingenious, tried to look for it on you tube, but wasn't there, which pleases me, as if you see this online it will spoil it, when Priscilla opens on Broadway.
Matilda - New York Post
I meant an article about all the theater switching. Seems like a big bit of gossip.
