And once again, I am reminded exactly why I love BobbyBubby. Every point you made was perfect re: Chita's Raspy Singing Tone

However, as much as I love Chita, I can't stand her rendition of "Follies Berger" on the Nine revival. The way she rolls her r's breaks my little Francophile heart.

And I agree LJay, that Vibrato cannot be touched. I'd take a killer vibrato over a "lovely non-smoker soprano" any day.

This comes up time and again. People of a certain age (though there are exceptions, as the lovely Ljay proves time and time again) just aren't used to hearing certain voices. They attach a look to a voice via their MTV trained aesthetic. Sad, really.

She was miscast Kitz. The one role I don't think she fit. Sadly, that's probably one of the only discs the Chita haters have...

Woo! Well Bobby nailed it again. Everything he said is so true. It is not ALL about technique. Interpretation is so important. And Chita NAILS interpretation when she sings.

Anyway, one of Muscle's first post on this board was about how "Chita is a talent-less old bag, who can't sing or dance." I kid you not, his exact words. So Chita fans know not to let his well misguided opinion get to them.

We can't post the links here, but go to freaking youtube.com, enter chita rivera, watch that clip of her and Liza from The Rink, and then tell me the old bag has no talent.

Chita doesnt have the normal singing voice that everyone has, her voice is unique filled with personality.
Her voice is abit raspy now, but when she was younger, it's cool! Her 'All That Jazz' in the OBC CD remains one of the best I have heard with alot to be desired.
Besides, she is SUCH a legend, erm... I don't we care!
I LOVE CHITA!!!!! Hope she comes back to Ldn!!!!
(soz, cant stop myself :P)

Even when she was young, Chita's voice had what can be described as "personality".

Some voices you love for their purity and beauty (Barbara Cook, Julie Andrews) and some you love for their personality (Chita, Gwen Verdon, Julie Wilson).

And I love Barbara Cook (she is my diva) and Chita equally.

As for "Kiss of the Spider Woman" (when I compare Chita's recording with Vanessa Williams'), I prefer Chita's.

Chita's "Aurora" has a sizzling theatricality. I feel that Vanessa's "Aurora" is pretty......and pretty bland. Though to be fair, Chita came to the part with over forty years of performing with the greats of musical theater (Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, etc.) under her belt and this was Vanessa's first show.

I just checked out Chita and Liza's, The Apple Doesn't Fall, performance on Youtube. I love The Rink and to see that, was primo.

There were tears of joy when I checked out Liza at The Kennedy Centre Honors Tribute to Kander & Ebb and A Night of a 100 Stars/Pair of Shoes, wonderful, wonderful stuff indeed. They don't make then like that anymore, do they? I had never seen Chris Walken dance before, nice lines: - )

Chita Rivera was brilliant playing Liliane La Fleur and her Folies Bergere brought the house to their feet. You know you're looking at Chita Rivera. Part of the wit of that is that this is, in many ways, what Chita Rivera actually is. When Chita Rivera suggests this French woman yoo end up with someone more French than a French woman."

Chita romps exuberantly through the role, regardless of its national boundaries.
Her rolling of the Rs,, now that's talent...

BobbyBubby, you're completely right. The only reason why people dislike Chita Rivera nowadays it's because they got too used to the Amy Spangers and Shoshana Beans, I hate that generic sound that come from them. Chita is a performer whose voice is full of personality, power, and she just has a devine star quality that few performers have today.
Ljay, are you serious about muscle's post on Chita? That is kind of disappointing. Anyways, it's always good to know people like Bobby and you are around to defend one of our greatest Broadway performers.

Just for the record, Im a fan of Chita. But anyways, I am not reading this thread anymore. I love her in The Rink and in some shows, but i think she can't really sing. That's it.
