well seeing as how she is a tony winner, I don't think she is in the minority. I agree, I really enjoy Lea Salonga's voice. even if she is in the minority, so what? its her opinion and she was just saying it.
And BroadwayBelle thanks so much for that youtube link! She sounds wonderful.

oops, PC error.

new2broadway: Cast recordings vary. Cinderella may cost more than $10 by the time it hits the US. On Broadway shows/plays, they vary in production costs too. Depends on actor & staff contracts, theater rent, orchestra size, set design, lighting, effects, overhead, lawyer fees, etc. The 2-mil budget for Cinderella is nothing compared to what they've spent in Mermaid, YF, Miss Saigon, Titanic, etc. But, I am quite surprised they hired a famous Italian couturier as their costume designer.

I meant that TheEnchantedHunter, who said Lea's voice was a "bleating honk-belt," was in the minority.
I think Lea's voice is the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.

new2broadway - just ignore TheEnchantedHunter. He (she?) does nothin' but moan and complain.
Of course it is always fun to see TEH foam at the mouth like a rabid sheep in every 'Ragtime' thread

Ooo ok. My apologies. I love her voice too. :)
And i would definitely not call it a beating honk-belt...they are entitled to their opinion but....wow, not at all. And most of her singing is in head voice anyway, but I would definitely disagree that her chest voice is anything but delicately powerful.

"I can't imagine a more inappropriate voice for the unbelievably charming CINDERELLA score than the bleating honk-belt of Lea Salonga. Another score by the masters sold down the (Yangtze) river.

Are you not only deaf but also racist? What's up with the Yangtze River comment? Say what you will about Salonga's voice, but that last bit of your post is completely inappropriate.

I got the CD, and Lea Salonga sounds terrific. I'm not impressed with the leading man though. He sounds generic. Where's Paolo Montalban when you need him? He sang more beautifully than the Prince in this international touring cast.
The keys for Cinderella's songs were lowered by either a full or half-step for Salonga. I think the only song that Salonga sings that is in the same key that Julie Andrews sang in is TEN MINUTES AGO.
Question: where does THERE'S MUSIC IN YOU come from? I can't figure out which R&H show that was extrapolated from.

jsg, you've no doubt heard the expression 'sold down the river,' yes? Meaning 'betrayed,' essentially. And Flower Drum Song's characters are Chinese, are they not? And the Yangtze is a river in China, correct? (Or should I assume you're a typical product of a contemporary American education?) So, in other words, I was making a pun. If you consider that racist and don't like it, you know what you can do with your nonsensical, thoroughly humorless and oh-so-politically correct opinion.
PS. There's Music In You is not from a R&H show but from a movie called Main Street To Broadway.

You're rationalizing your culturally ignorant and racist statement. You know very well you were compiling the multicultural asian cast so as to make a dumb chinese joke.
Sweet.
Being politically correct is just that...being correct. What you were was rude and disqusting to the many asian viewers of this board.

Your post is as ridiculous in its umbrage as jsg's, je veux, and doesn't even make sense ('compiling the cast?'). But I'll take the time to rebut it, pointless as it may be.
Read my original post: "Another score by the masters." Obviously referring to FLOWER DRUM SONG and the shabby treatment it was given in the horrible 'revisal' with a miscast Salonga, particularly in the vocal department, in a production which, by the way, indulged in a 'politically incorrect,' embarrassing gay stereotype one hadn't seen since the days of Franklin Pangborn.
Since the original Broadway cast of FLOWER DRUM SONG was itself comprised of African-American, Chinese, and Japanese ethnicities, obviously my objection about the FDS revisal and the projected production of CINDERELLA has nothing to do with race or anything else you've fantasized in your hysteria, but rather the artistic choices made in the handling of the material. But I'm thinking that's beyond your ken to understand. I'm thinking you're just one of those unfortunate souls, so quick to point the finger at non-existent demons, for whom the word 'niggardly' is a racial slur and who consider the city name of "Fishkill" unfair to piscine vertebrates.
Sweet.

TEH, if there's anyone here who is ridiculous, it is you. The tone of your posts, your condescending comments and your "jokes" are all too clear. Your supposed "pun" on the expression "sold down the river" is what it is: ignorant and racist. You appear to present yourself as someone who believes they are smart and intelligent -- perhaps you are one of the elite who is not a product of contemporary American education (whatever the hell that means, and I guess only you know what it does) -- so at the very least do not be disingenuous. Have the courage to be called out on your prejudices and your stupid statements about and assumptions of persons you would not know from Adam.
You could have made the same point without making the reference to the Yangtze River. You knew what you were doing, what you meant and what you wanted to convey when you wrote your post, TEH. Accordingly, don't you dare take umbrage at being called out for what you have written and for what your post stands.
Grow up.

Update:
In an exclusive arrangement with iTunes©, Broadway Asia Entertainment (producers Steven Baruch / Richard Frankel / Simone Genatt / Marc Routh / Tom Viertel) proudly announces the upcoming international release of the 2008 Original International Tour Cast Recording of Rodgers & Hammerstein's CINDERELLA starring Tony Award winner Lea Salonga available exclusively online beginning Tuesday, October 28, 2008. The 2008 International Tour is directed by Bobby Garcia.
Produced by LAKESHORE RECORDS (Little Miss Sunshine, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Superbad), the new cast recording of CINDERELLA was recorded in the Philippines at Carmel House Studios. The show's cast of 26 was accompanied by the studio's in-house orchestra, the FILharminoKA, under the direction of resident conductor Gerard Salonga.
The critically acclaimed international tour of CINDERELLA opened on July 29, 2008 in Salonga's hometown of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines, before embarking on a 30-week Asian tour playing such countries as China, Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Macao and Korea.
The new album is one of the most complete recordings of the beloved Rodgers & Hammerstein score and features new renditions of such classics as "In My Own Little Corner," "Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful" and "Ten Minutes Ago." With several new orchestrations by Tony Award nominee Larry Blank, the recording includes two songs from the R&H catalogue rarely performed in the stage version including "The Sweetest Sounds" and "There's Music in You."
Tony Award winning actress Lea Salonga leads the cast in the title role. Salonga is widely known for creating the role Kim in Miss Saigon in both London's West End and on Broadway winning won both the Olivier and Tony Awards for her heart-breaking performance. Salonga's strong bonds to the Rodgers & Hammerstein musical library date from her childhood in Manila, the Philippines, where she appeared in professional productions of The King and I and The Sound of Music. She can be heard on the all-star studio recording of The King and I with Julie Andrews and Ben Kingsley. In 2002, she appeared in R&H's Flower Drum Song on Broadway. Salonga also created the singing voices of Disney heroines Princess Jasmine in Aladdin and Mulan in Mulan.
Salonga is joined by Peter Saide as the "Prince," Julia Cook as "Stepmother," Jen Bechter as "Portia," Brandy Zarle as "Joy," Charlie Parker as the "Fairy Godmother," Aaron Galligan-Stierle as the "Herald," Jefferson Slinkard as the "King," Janna Cardia as the "Queen," Steve Gagliastro as "Chef" and Richard Cerato as "Steward."
Produced by Broadway Asia Entertainment and directed by Bobby Garcia, the international tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein's CINDERELLA features a book adapted by award winning writer and director Mark Waldrop. The design team features Tony Award winner David Gallo (scenic design) and Paul Miller (lighting design) along with renowned couture designer Renato Balestra (costume design), Michael Waters (sound design) and choreography by Vince Pesce.
CINDERELLA was written by the legendary American song-writing duo of Oscar Hammerstein II (book and lyrics) and Richard Rodgers (music). The timeless and enchanting musical version of the fairy tale was originally presented live on television in 1957 starring Julie Andrews and was the most widely viewed program in the history of the medium. Successful remakes hit the airwaves in 1965 starring Lesley Ann Warren and in 1997 starring pop singer Brandy in the title role, multiple Grammy Award-winner Whitney Houston as her Fairy Godmother and Tony Award winner Bernadette Peters as her wicked Stepmother.

Falling In Love With Love was put into the Brady tv movie, because they needed something for Bernedette to sing! She can't be in a musical and not sing!!! It would be a waste of talent
