This morning I finished the last of three brilliant books that I bought in New York two weeks ago. They wernt books I was looking for or had even heard of before, but I stumbled across them in some of New York's truly fascinating second hand bookshops.
*The Tony Award Book -
Four Decades Of Great American Theatre*
Lee Alan Morrow
This one weighs a ton and I was really worried about the extra weight on the return flight.
Its cram packed full of 100s of production pictures I had never seen before and it also has 100s of full page poster art work of all the shows in contains,
Complete listings of the nominees and winners from day one, on April 6th 1947, right through till June 7th 1987.
Fascinating, one of those books that you always see on the table and will pick up again and again to just browse through a few pages.
**********************************************************************************
*Broadway Babies Say Goodnight*
Mark Steyn.
A very interesting book by ex writer for The Independant.
It covers, in great detail, producers, directors, authors, lyricists, designers, recordings, divas etc etc etc and much more that goes into a Broadway or West End musical.
Great stories about tempers flying, shows opening, shows closing, some well documented and some not.
Some stories are very detailed and informative and he covers London and New York equally.
************************************************************************************
*Diary Of a Mad Playwright*
James Kirkwood
Absolutely hilarious true account of the tour of a two hander starring Carol Channing and Mary martin that seemed to have gone trough a living hell while on its U.S tour and was closed before it got to Broadway. Cat fights galore.
The diaries are of the shows author, James Kirkwood who also wrote 'A Chorus Line' amongst others.
