Are you sure it hasn't been cast. I heard from a friend the other day that it has been casted they just haven't announced it yet. I was hoping someone has heard something. I really want to know who the leading ladies in the line up will be.
Funny that you mentioned it, I walked past the theatre today (with Color Purple posters and flags galore!!) and wondered who was going to be in it.
I would like to know if it's been cast as well. I'm living vicariously through my best friend at the moment... three callbacks later and we're still waiting!

what role did your friend go in for?
She went to the open call in Harlem and they had her read for Celie. We're assuming they cast Celie long before the open calls and she was being considered for Celie u/s at the most, but honestly, she'd be thrilled just to be in the ensemble.

I think Jennifer Hudson should play Celie.

It's def still being cast. They're having a time finding people. I mean the RIGHT people. They're auditioning this week.
I heard Rufus Bonds Jr. might play Mister.
With all that's going on with Jennifer Hudson's career right now, I very much doubt she will commit to a long Broadway-type contract.
Once all this awards show madness ends (after the Oscars), her next focus in on her upcoming CD. I'm sure she's focusing on film-work before making any attempts at a Broadway debut.
I know that LaToya London is in the production but not sure as who; I had heard Nettie but I assumed Shug; her voice would be perfect for it and she's got a sexiness about herself but we'll see I guess.
Cheers,
Christopher
Auditions are still occurring for this production, though some roles may already be cast. In fact, (I believe) there was a singers' call earlier this week, and there is a dancers' call tomorrow. Principals will probably be announced soon, and complete casting will probably be announced sometime during the tour's rehearsal period.

Looks like those two have been cast. I take it Holmes will be in the ensemble?
Considering she is a Jefferson Award winner with some pretty substancial credits, I assume LaTonya Holmes is in a principle role (most likely Shug.)

I'm pretty sure Felicia P. Fields will recreate her Sophia for Chicago. She's a native Chicagoan and I'm pretty sure I read awhile ago that she would be doing it.

well as far as I know Jeannette from the Broadway cast is suppose to open the Chicago cast. When she leaves the Broadway cast Lachanze is suppose to come back for a few weeks and then someone new is coming in. Not sure how much of that is true...but the news about Latoya is great...I can see her as Nettie and Shug her voice is amazing!

I doubt that is true. Jeanette just signed a contract in the fall. She's wanted to do this on Broadway for a while AND she's got things going on here besides Color Purple. I don't know why'd she leave and why LaChanze would come back after such a short absence.

Fosse76, it has been confirmed for a long time that Felica P. Fields is reprising her role as Sofia.
Isn't Felicia Fields doing the Chicago sitdown and not the tour itself?
I think they are two separate companies, but I may be wrong.

You're wrong, at least for the time being. As of now, the production in Chicago is the National Tour, which will have a 9-month run. If it looks as though it can continue much longer, they will mount a new production to tour and take the cast with them, and a more Chicago-based cast will continue with performances. It is the exact same thing with Wicked, and it is anticipated that Jersey Boys will be doing a similar thing.
