Any suggestions for a comedic/light hearted play for a community theatre to fill a slot with for next spring? Preferably a smaller cast 6-12 people; simple sets/costumes. Anything from NOISES OFF (but obviously not due to hefty set) to THE DIVINERS. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Have a look at OVER THE RIVER AND THROUGH THE WOODS.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
Almost anything by Neil Simon:
The Odd Couple
Plaza Suite
Barefoot in the Park
They're oldies but goodies.
House of Blue Leaves has one set. You need a working door and window. But it's just an apartment. The script has all sorts of suggestions for how to dress the set - but you don't have to follow those suggestions. However, the ending is not exactly "light"

Barefoot in the Park- 6 roles, one set. Very funny. Always delights audiences.
Anything by David Meyer. His plays are basically made for small community theatres.
I did Sound Effects with a local group and it went off pretty well.
Simon always comes to mind -- Rumors is one set, 10 people. VERY FUNNY. If you want a suspense thriller, Deathtrap is good.

My personal favorite is Funny money, very funny and a cast of 6 if I remeber correctly.

I've seen David Lindsay-Abaire's comedy Fuddy Meers performed in community theater, and it's hilarious.
As Bees In Honey Drown
Play On (It's similar to Noises Off, but you could do it with alot less set)
The Curios Savage
The Musical Comedy Murders of the 1940s. Hilarious, but it has a pretty large set and a large cast. It could be made cheaply, though. I'd look into it.
And I've always wanted to CLUE: The Musical.

I have to agree with Rumors. Noises Off! is great, but much trickier.
Do The Nerd by Larry Shue. A little less well-known, but SO funny, and a unit set.
or The Foreigner - one set. some accents. smallish cast.

Prelude to a Kiss!!
Great play. VERY simple set and i think there are about 7 or 8 in the cast. SUCH a good show.

Arsenic and Old Lace comes to mind, but it requires a bit of a set--you can work around it. I'm literally performing it right now in a trailer...we've made it work.
Kimberly Akimbo is great- but that's like, a five person cast...and boarderlining on dark, though it is VERY funny :P
I'm surprised no one has suggested Brighton Beach Memoirs yet.
