I've never been able to understand why American Idiot is simply an "album" or a "jukebox musical" when shows like Tommy aren't.
It's a ROCK OPERA, people.
and the answer to your question? Yes! Its main competition would be:
1. An inoffensive, formulaic and competent musical that opened months ago and that most critics inexplicably treated like a crayon drawing their kindergartner posted on the refrigerator.
2. A funky, innovative Afrobeat show that is nonetheless too loosely structured and obscure for road producers to like it.
3. Is it a languid, storyless dance piece or a rowdy bonanza suited for a Vegas showroom? YOU DECIDE. Nobody else seems to be able to.
4. A multimillion dollar-budgeted franchise adaptation with an unbeatable pedigree that nonetheless seems unable to make itself heard.
5. Great singers singing Sondheim songs while he talks on plasma screens behind them.
This is a weak year, but it doesn't matter - American Idiot is exactly the kind of thing the Tonys will eat up. It's commercial but artsy, edgy but familiar, the kind of show that can play in Cleveland and Columbus Circle.
