Posted: 3/30/10 at 4:03pmwithout being opened yet and reviews being written yet, its certainly hard to say. Although, with all the hype i'm betting on it getting a nod along with Fela, Come Fly Away and Memphis.

Having also seen The Addams Family, Memphis, Fela, and Sondheim on Sondheim, I can easily see American Idiot beating those musicals.

Another slim year for choices. It should DEFINITELY get a nod.
Win? WAY too early to guess...but of course, it COULD.

Posted: 3/30/10 at 9:34pmI have yet to see American Idiot but all the rest have sucked. Fela! was probably the most thought out of all of them and I think my favorite.

What a crappy season for new musicals.
Only 2 new scores, both extremely flawed. 2 modern dance shows disguised as musical theatre. A revue. And an album.
Hardly the brightest season for the future of musical theatre.
Wish Scottsboro Boys could sneak in but it seems highly unlikely.
Hope Everday Rapture comes in a stirs up the pot a little.

Two albums! American Idiot and Million Dollar Quartet. I honestly would give Burn the Floor a Best Musical nomination over half of the crap in this category this year.

I've never been able to understand why American Idiot is simply an "album" or a "jukebox musical" when shows like Tommy aren't.
It's a ROCK OPERA, people.
and the answer to your question? Yes! Its main competition would be:
1. An inoffensive, formulaic and competent musical that opened months ago and that most critics inexplicably treated like a crayon drawing their kindergartner posted on the refrigerator.
2. A funky, innovative Afrobeat show that is nonetheless too loosely structured and obscure for road producers to like it.
3. Is it a languid, storyless dance piece or a rowdy bonanza suited for a Vegas showroom? YOU DECIDE. Nobody else seems to be able to.
4. A multimillion dollar-budgeted franchise adaptation with an unbeatable pedigree that nonetheless seems unable to make itself heard.
5. Great singers singing Sondheim songs while he talks on plasma screens behind them.
This is a weak year, but it doesn't matter - American Idiot is exactly the kind of thing the Tonys will eat up. It's commercial but artsy, edgy but familiar, the kind of show that can play in Cleveland and Columbus Circle.

Why couldn't Catch Me If You Can open this season?
Though I haven't seen any of the other shows besides CMIYC, I could see that taking best musical and best score (easily the latter).
