This thread is a joke. At least it gave me a good laugh.

Tonys.  Not Tony's.  And no.

Gosh. I need a new screen name.

I think it will be another year like The Producers where Hamilton will simply win in every category it's nominated for. American Psycho may very well deserve best lighting, scenery or costumes but it won't get them.

I agree. Hamilton is going to sweep, except for lead actress and maybe lead actor.

I agree it'll sweep- that is absolutely a no-brainer. Whether it's to the degree The Producers (and Hello Dolly) did, though, remains to be seen.

I think the only category where Hamilton is vulnerable is Best Actress (Erivo will win). Other than that I would consider it an upset to hear any other name than Hamilton called on award night.

The real question we should be asking is if Hamilton will break the record set by The Producers.

Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco. Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!

Good question Whizzer. The Producers' record is 12? It's possible...

^ I couldn't agree more regarding Erivo.

But with this in mind, let's walk through the potential path for Hamilton, shall we? If we preclude Best Actress from its crop of potential wins, to make it to 12, the show needs to take:

1) Musical

2) Best Actor in a Musical

3) Best Featured Actor in a Musical

4) Best Featured Actress in a Musical

5) Best Direction of a Musical

6) Best Book of a Musical

7) Best Score

9) Best Scenic Design of a Musical

10) Best Costume Design of a Musical

11) Best Lighting Design of a Musical

12) Best Choreography

If they fail to pick up any of those awards, I believe they will not break The Producers' record. I think they have a very, very strong shot at grabbing all of those—but please correct me if I'm wrong that they need to acquire all of those.

I still think the Tonys might want to spread the love a little bit, especially since most people are going to be expecting Hamilton to sweep. I'm just pulling for Leslie to win.

Best Choreography may go to Savion Glover...

I would agree that Choreography, out of those 12, is the one Hamilton may face a serious challenger.

The record is 12 and yes I think Glover could put up some fight for choreography, but I think there will be a lot of just voting straight down the ballot for Hamilton, much like people vote all Democrat or Republican on election day.

Did Book of Mormon win 9 Tonys? I think so...

There's no way Hamilton will win less than 10, IMO. It will most likely have to snag choreography to make 12. Too bad sound design isn't around any longer or that would be another easy one for Hamilton to win.

Yes, Mormon won 9 (losing Best Actor, Featured Actor, Choreography, and Costumes) and Once won 8 (losing Actress, Featured Actress, and Choreography and not being nominated for Featured Actor, Score, or Costumes).

I don't think there's any way of predicting the Tony outcomes because too much depends on how hard a show campaigns for their Tonys (i.e., the 2004 Tonys where Avenue Q campaigned so heavily when it seemed that Wicked might sweep), or how much a show "needs" a Tony to stay alive on Broadway or  subsequent touring potential (in effect, a 'sympathy' Tony). My personal feeling is that Tony voters often vote based on personal emotions and industry "need", rather than unbiased merit. I often find the results surprising.

I'm still scratching my head over the 2005 results when The Light in the Piazza won for Original Score, Orchestrations, Leading Actress, Scenic Design, Costume Design, and Lighting Design, but Best Musical went to Spamalot. How does a show receive top honors for nearly every element that might indicate "Best Musical" (save one - Best Book went to ...Spelling Bee) get passed over for the top award?
