I'm seeing it tonight too.
Anybody else going to the "Lobby Project" a half hour before the show? Director Sam Gold and Amy Herzog are talking about "how personal politics impacts art."

I was there tonight, and I have confess that I didn't know what was going on half the time, but it could be me. The singing was glorious, but I don't think the score was that good. Maybe I need to listen again.

Was there last night. It was OK, an odd "play". Enjoyed the performance, especially Raul's - he was his typical self. Sound seemed fine (we were in Row M or orch).
At first, there was a guy on stage who looked like Raul, but I remembered he doesn't show up until later in the play.
Sometimes wasn't sure what character was playing who, but it wasn't that complicated.....

Posted: 7/12/13 at 8:53amI was confused by that, too! I thought Raul had made an early entrance! I wanted to add that the orchestra seemed to be drowning out the singers at first. Either the balance got corrected or I got used to the sound as the evening progressed, but It ceased to bother me.

Posted: 7/12/13 at 9:13amThe sound in the Grand Tier on Wednesday seemed all right. I thought the shared mics were responsible for a lot of the dropped lines. That can be a really tricky thing to time right if the dialogue is fast.

I was way up in mezz row E on the side. No sound problems whatsoever there. No one I was with noticed a problem either.
There were some pretty enjoyable moments for me, and they were all with the songs. I liked the "score" very much.

I was there last night. I think the real problem with this show is that it should never be done in a concert setting. A frothy show like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes or No, No Nanette are fun things to see in a setting like that, but this seemed very strange out of context and the direction did nothing to help matters. A lot of what the director seemed to want to do might have worked nicely in a theater, but in a concert reading like this it just didn't quite work.
I respected the show a great deal and actually thoroughly enjoyed the score which was performed to perfection by the Encore's Orchestra and the cast. Anika Noni Rose, Raul Esparza and Da'vine Joy Randolph all stood out.
I agree with Whizzer that I was never emotionally involved, but in the end I enjoyed it for what it was. I may never want to see a production again, but for a $25 orchestra seat to see an all star cast like that, I was perfectly happy.
