Cubby Bernstein...who is this kid?

I've seen Show Business, and there is no actual proof that these "campaigns" influence Tony voters.

Look at the reviews. The reviews for Avenue Q were far superior to Wicked, and therefore it rightfully won.

Just because a show is the best-reviewed doesn't mean it wins. The "quality" of a show can only go so far in a voter's decision. It's mostly politics.

No one ever promised "proof" or hard facts that the Q campaign 'swayed' votes from another show to Q. It's just a given that it had influence. Can you provide proof that it didn't?

I mean, let's face it. If QUALITY was the most influential factor in giving out the Tony, then the history of shows that won would be quite different:

GREY GARDENS over SPRING AWAKENING
THE COLOR PURPLE (or DROWSY) over JERSEY BOYS
THR LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA (or ANY of the other shows) over SPAMALOT
CAROLINE OR CHANGE over AVENUE Q
URINETOWN over THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE
THE WILD PARTY over CONTACT
PARADE over FOSSE
RAGTIME or SIDE SHOW over THE LION KING

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

we won't even go into detail about some of your opinions about "quality", as that would start a whole new thread.

And no, I can't provide proof. That's the point, neither can you, so your argument is not valid. It's just an opinion of yours based on no facts.

And to say that "It's mostly politics" is rubbish.

Do you even know one Tony voter?

"And to say that "It's mostly politics" is rubbish."

It's pointless to continue this discussion if you don't believe Tony votes are politics. Again, it's more about friends voting for friends, shows being marketable, etc.

I'm going to weigh in here folks. When hundreds of people who are actively involved in an industry try to choose the best of their trade, it all boils down to one thing: chutzpah. That's right.

Seriously though, no one knows what's going to happen on June 15th, but I know one thing... If those other guys get up at 7, we'll get up at 6. If our audiences want their own pair of roller skates, I'll lace them up and push them down 44th Street.

As my many many friends on the New York Knickerbockers often say, "We're going to give it 110% and play our kind of basketball." That's really all anyone can ask for.

Keep dreaming, keep reaching.

If you're taking advice from the Knicks, then Xanadu has no shot of winning. You might want to take advice from someone who's won something in the past 20 years.

Cubby, your'e a brilliant marketing sock puppet, but, really...just SAY that you're shilling for XANADU, for Christ's sakes!
Of course I have no ill feeling for XANADU, I like the show, ... but, CUBBY, your'e infiltrating this board like an undercover FBI agent.

tiny - we all know that Cubby is campaigning for XANADU so I don't see how he is "undercover?" Shilling? I think that's obvious - but at least this shill is witty. re: Cubby Bernstein...who is this kid?

You cut to the core of me Barcelona. The Knicks - role models they aren't.

Stay spicy.

Capn, TABOO wasn't nominated for Best Musical.

THE BOY FROM OZ took the fourth slot that year.

who else thinks Barcelona should shut the hell up????

leave Cubby alone and leave XANADU alone. at least they're creative... putting in some effort for their Tony campaign.

what will IN THE HEIGHTS do? play the race card? just keep repeating "we have 13 Tony Nominations" ?

PASSING STRANGE is just much too cool to do a campaign.

and CRY-BABY... well. do they even have the money to create a campaign? does it matter? they aren't winning.

the Tonys are all about politics. it's been like that for years. you're naive if you actually take the voting process (and nominations) seriously.

This thread renews my faith in Broadway.

David Merrick would love it.

You have to give credit to the Producers of Xanadu for chutzpah and, let's face it, in times of an oil crisis, a recession and the fact that an imbecile has dispatched our entire army to Fort Zindernuf, along comes cuddly Cubby to bring a smile to all the denizens of Broadway.

Thanks, guys. You'd have my vote if I had one.

broadwaywriter - not sure it matters. This child will be on Broadway, in november, so everyone will know his name.

he is Young Shrek in the SHREK Musical and gets some "considerable" stage time (from what I've heard)
