"Curtains" is a letdown!

I know. I LOVE DRS, don't get me wrong, but when John Lithgow and Norbert left, I think the show started a slow death. Sherie can't carry the show all by herself, you know.
As for "Curtains" gonig there, I wish it luck, however, I don't think it will do as well as most shows do on Broadway.

Posted: 8/10/06 at 2:39pmWhen I saw Curtains on Tuesday, I thought the first act sort of dragged along a bit, but then it picked up. I definitely thought the second act was much better than the first, dispite the fire alarm going off in the middle of it when I saw it.

Popular---I actually thought there was one WOW moment in the show (which I mentioned in my writeup). The Act 2 duet between Pierce and Paice. While the song itself wasn't "wow," the chemistry and charm between the two performers stopped the show (at least for a full minute of applause) when I saw it.
I don't know if that will be enough to leave people dancing down the aisles, satisfied, as they leave the theatre or not. But at least for one number, they "got there" and hit a home run, IMO.

Sorry my computer froze.
it was about 15 minutes in, the fire alarm went off. For a second I thought it was part of the show because it sounded like a police siren, but then I realized that the actors just stopped/froze and Jill Paice started laughing. David I think said what is going on, I couldn't hear over the alarm. What happened was that the horse off stage had caught on fire and set off the alarm. They restarted and with a little bit of ad-lib by David the show was back up and running. It was funny

Posted: 8/10/06 at 3:45pmI saw the show last Sunday afternoon and enjoyed it immensely. I sat up in the balcony, and everyone around me were laughing hysterically. It's not as good as DRS, but I enjoyed the hommage it was paying to the classic musicals. There are definitely a lot of one liners - maybe too much. And some of the inside jokes went over my head. But the dancing and acting is fabulous and different. As I was leaving I couldn't get 'The Woman's Dead' out of my head. I wish I could go back and see it again.

"A Tough Act To Follow" stopped the show when I saw it Saturday matinee. It reminded me of the "Chasing The Clouds Away" number of My One and Only with Tommy Tune and Twiggy. David Hyde Pierce was at his best in this number as well as Rob Ashford's choreography.
I actually enjoyed this show but I doubt it's ready for Broadway. The choreography was very lackluster at some points, especially I thought the number with Bambi (I don't recall the name of the actress playing the role) needs a lot of work. Jason Danieley is beyond wasted, he tries to make the most of his solo but the number lasts all of 3 seconds. I disagree Karen Ziemba was underused, this is an ensemble piece not a star turn and she gets to shine in many occasions. Debra Monk plays the kind of role she does best, she knows it, Scott Ellis knows it, Kander & Ebb knew it, and we know it and that's why it works so well. The book needs A LOT of work which I don't believe it's so much Holmes' fault as it is Scott Ellis', a director like Tommy Tune could make this show work a lot better.

I personally loved the show! I thought it was hilarious and if you know me you know I love me some Rob Ashford! Megan Sikora was amazing with her dance number! The show needs to be tightened up but I think it has a lot of potential. I haven't laughed out loud to a show that hard in a while.
It was very fun to see all the celebs there!
Popular - that picture turned out great. I actually like that picture of me! (I'm on the right for those of you who don't know me)

haha! My Darcie Roberts story:p
I saw Dacie when she was 16 in Annie. It was my first big show (and by big I mean it was a TINY theatre with maybe 200-300 seats in my hometown). Anyway, Im back in CA this month...home from NY and I'm looking through old playbills. and I happend to FIND the Annie playbill from when I was 9. I brought it to Curtains and she totally cracked up! She loved it. I was happy. haha

Posted: 8/10/06 at 5:04pmI enjoyed the show as well. True, it could use some work, but it definitely wasn't awful. (Although the crazy woman in the standby line was...) All the star watching was quite enjoyable as well. And seriously, how many of you can say you frightened Joel Grey and Ron Rifkin together? (Not that I'm entirely proud of that fact. I'm not even quite sure what happened...)

GretchaSketh, I saw your Stephanie Block quote and I have a Stephanie Block story. One of the times I tried vainly to get a ticket to Wicked in the Lotto line outside the Pantages Theater, I saw a fuss being made over this young woman by two or three people near the theater's front entrance, a few feet from the Lotto table. I was close enough to discover that it was Block, and she too was waiting off to the side hoping to get Lotto tickets for someone. Now when have you ever seen a star do that? And, no, it looked like she didn't get any, either. I didn't even know her but I felt admiration for her that day.

Posted: 8/10/06 at 5:32pmOne of those people was probably me. haha! I tried lotto a few times in LA and never won. I was there however when she DID win! Lucky her. She and her boyfriend were out there everyday trying so she could get tickets for friends. She's from the LA area so she knows a lot of people out there and only got 2 house seats a night. I actually helped Bret (her boyfriend) try to win at one point. but we all lost!

dancnqn5 - now how did I know you'd be on BWW? I don't think I ever caught your name, but I DID catch Ron and Joel's face as they sped up to walk away from you. But then again, you shared a bathroom sink with Andrea Martin and she didn't run so you can't be all that bad! LOL
latheatrelover - don't EVEN get me started on Steph at the lotto! I was there on a day that she actually did win for her friends. How precious is she!

It's a very nice picture of both you.
I thought about going last night, but I had a long day at work and didn't want to risk going all the way over to the Ahmanson and not getting in. I'll probably just try walk up HotTix for a random performance.
Although, DAME has me worried about excessive levels of tryptophan.

Yeah I don't think its a total turkey - its fun and amusing, but they're going to need to work on a few things before NY. But it's fun and slick and well made already.
DRS, though, was a total hoot when it tried out in San Diego. Don't get why the LA Times bashed it so hard when it was down there.
Meanwhile, Curtains now has a fantastic review in the LA Times, published for Friday's paper:

Also I saw that the Ahmanson put up photos from opening night on their blog this afternoon:

Hey guys. I changed the title of this thread. I came back home after a long day.. saw the thread title and thought to myself.. "Dame.. that is kind of nasty". I still thought the show is a mess.. But it is a brand new show that is just starting to find its way. The reviews that have come out so far have been very mixed and very generous. LA reviews for the big shows tend to always be generous. But go and decide for yourself..
