"Curtains" is a letdown!

Hey guys. I changed the title of this thread. I came back home after a long day.. saw the thread title and thought to myself.. "Dame.. that is kind of nasty". I still thought the show is a mess.. But it is a brand new show that is just starting to find its way. The reviews that have come out so far have been very mixed and very generous. LA reviews for the big shows tend to always be generous. But go and decide for yourself..

I still can't figure out why my body decided it wanted to act that way, considering it was so out of character. At least I didn't scare Andrea Martin (or anyone else for that matter). I couldn't live with myself if I was anymore of an idiot :)

I am glad to see most of the posts even if they aren't positive acknowledge that the audience seems to enjoy the show.
I listened to the last collaboration by Kander-Ebb-Stone last night, multi-tony award winning "Woman of the Year." I have to say "Curtains" has better music and for a non-singer David Hyde Pierce is much better than Lauren Bacall. I can't speak for the book since I never saw "Woman of the Year" on stage.

I'm sure they can fix the flaws by the time comes to Broadway. It's a shame people are totally writing it off in the state it's in now.
K&E are still amazing, no matter what any of you say about how dreadful this score is.

Posted: 8/11/06 at 11:16amI keep thinking this is a different thread every time the title changes -- it's depressing! :P
re: 'Curtains' Is A Turkey.#57
Posted: 8/11/06 at 12:21pmI had only changed the title once per a PM request. But when I saw I had made a mistake in my post I went back to edit that and then all of a sudden the threads title was gone and I had to put a new one up.

Posted: 8/11/06 at 5:34pmWhile I wouldn't go so far as calling it a "turkey" I agree with your assessment. It's definitely second rate--I see no reason for it to go to Broadway. Worst of all, it doesn't seem like a Kander and Ebb show.

Sorry if this sounds rude, but why the heck should you be the arbiter of what gets to Broadway?!!? Curtains has been on-stage for barely 3 weeks, so it could well incorporate major changes before it finishes in LA. Not to mention the fact that there are MANY people who would like the opportunity to see it for themselves and make their own minds up!
If it tanks on Broadway then so-be-it, but it should at least be given A CHANCE to make it! :-0

He is entitled to his opinion and he wasn't trying to be arbiter of anything.

Absolutely! But those of us who have seen it can only comment ( and are entitled to ) on what is on that stage right now.

And those who disagree with the negative comments expressed here have the right, as well, to let others know that there are many, including me, who think this is a TERRIFIC show. Last year, we were lucky to have Drowsy Chaperone at the same theater and now lightning strikes twice with Curtains.
Sometimes in reading this thread, I think the song about newspaper drama critics from Curtains could be applied here.

I'd rather have CURTAINS on Broadway then TARZAN... I've seen 'em both and think HOW a show gets to Broadway is pretty arbitrary...If you've got the cash flow, then why not? Broadway has had MANY shows that we all cringe over.
The question should be, "Once it makes it to Broadway, is it Tony material?"

No. The question should be "Is it worth your hard earned cash?" At its current state "Curtains" is not . Curious to hear if changes have been made since opening.

Well, I saw Curtains, and I wouldn't even come close to calling it a "turkey". Sure it needs a bit of work, but it's in pretty good shape for a world premier. The audience laughed consistantly through the show and give quite a long sustained ovation at the end (and after a couple of numbers).
It has some of the longest bows that I've seen and the audience stayed (and clapped) their appreciation through the whole thing.
I think this could be a hit on Broadway with the proper reworking.
By the way, I saw it from one of the balcony boxes, and it was a pretty good seat for this production. It's about half way back of the orchestra and up, up and further up. The view was only a bit blocked on stage right, and we were way closer than the front row of the mezzanine. (We were in the farthest box to the rear, closer boxes may not be so prime.) I'd sit here again in a heart beat.
(My review is somewhere further down in the Message Board.)

"you must have either seen a completely different performance then I"
I think what you meant is "you must have either seen a completely different performance than I" THAN.
"Then" means "at that time" as in "Things we're better then" or "what happened next", as in "then the cat came in the door".
When you are comparing something you will use "than". "I had a better time than you."
I normally don't correct people and I'm only doing it because it seems to be an epidemic on the internet that people don't know the difference between THEN and THAN. I certainly am not a grammarian and my spelling is terrible but this bugs the hell out of me.
I'm only posting this because I will be away for a few weeks and won't have to read any responses or consider any hurt feelings.
