Hi, people. After not posting here for a while, I'm back with a request for some help. I want to put the OBCR of RENT onto an Ipod I have, but, in doing so, would like to 'pare' the show down to its absolute essential songs structurally. The problem is that, having only seen the film version, I'm not sure what songs would be considered absolutely essential in terms of narrative structure and which ones could be excised.
Can anybody help me out with this?
This might help.
Why not put the whole thing on there, listen to it, and when you decide a song wasn't necessarily, delete it? Eventually, you will have what you want...

That "Highlights" album is a good resource starting point, but these are the specific songs that I'm unsure about including:
You Okay Honey
We're Okay
On the Street
Christmas Bells
Also, the thing about including the entire album and then eliminating songs by listening to them is that I really don't want to have to work through stuff that is just "scene setup".

So, basically, it sounds to me that you want others to do this for you? Keep in mind, they did film (very well may I add) the Broadway production, it's even on Youtube. So you can enjoy that one too and figure it out yourself from there.
The biggest complaint about the highlights edition from Amazon reviews is that it isn't the whole thing. That's not your problem. So when in doubt, I'd say keep those four plus what's on the highlights edition. You lose nothing from doing so, and it establishes enough of the plot to be able to follow it without the rest.

Thank you. It looks like the only stuff I'll be excising, then, is the Tune Ups and Voice Mails.

It's not laziness. It's seeking opinions from people more knowledgeable than myself.

If you look at the track list of the highlights edition, some of the songs were also edited down specifically for that album. Might not hurt to give those a listen, if you can, and see if you'd prefer the pared-down versions.
And congratulations on your remarkable resolve, but the dude just wants to hear the essential songs on his iPod. What does it hurt to offer suggestions?
And it’s my opinion that all the songs are essential, or else they wouldn’t be there.
It’s really up to them to decide what they don’t want to listen to.
I wouldn’t want someone to miss out on the fabulous recording because strangers on the internet said certain songs are skippable. Decide for yourself!

So you reduced 2 hours and 7 minutes to a mere 2 hours?! I mean, I'm not quite sure what you're gaining here... aside from almost knowing the music from Rent.
I love my iPod (which includes both CDs of the OBC Rent), but I feel it’s starting to fail. I have hundreds of CDs on it. What have others done with their music collections in the approaching/already-here post-iPod era?

I rely on my iCloud and Apple Music. I’d say at least 90% of the albums I own are available via my $10/month Apple Music Subscription. Of course, I don’t own Apple Music albums technically, but it’s nice since I probably own over 3,000 albums across all formats and since obviously I haven’t digitally uploaded most of them. The ones I do have uploaded from CDs are also saved to the cloud for $25 year. Amazon has a similar deal, but since I’m an Apple device kinda guy, I let that subscription go. I think Apple’s ($25/year) version is called iTunes Match. The other advantage of the additional $9.99/month Apple Music subscription is you can download any album in the vast library to any Apple device. I travel a lot so it’s nice to listen to Apple Music albums to my device for free for listening on planes. With the cloud you never lose your music as long as you keep your subscriptions paid. I have like $10,000 songs in my Apple Music/ITunes library on my iPhone but they don’t take up that much memory as most of them are in the cloud.

I've never been a mobile-only guy, so all of my music library is on my iMac and whatever I want is synced to my phone or whatever, so if I switch out hardware, I can always just copy the same stuff onto the new equipment.
You can do what I did - cut the whole album to make space for all 3 major recordings of Les Mis
