Whether she believes it or not, a recent tweet/retweet of hers makes it sound like she looks down on African Americans (something about how they're jealous of Africans), so that kind of makes me not want to see her play one of America's greatest icons. (Maybe it was taken out of context I guess?)"

Nearly all of her tweets and reactions prove that she approaches every situation with groups and separation in mind, also situations that have nothing to do with that, which is really a pity. I told her this once too.Thinking in human is the key to equality.

BUT, I see wrong when it happens, and even though she does it to others, in this case she is not doing anything wrong by playing that role and the remarks about why she shouldn't play the role are quite unfair.

I think the "outrage" of Cynthia being cast has nothing to do with her being right for the role (bc let's face it, she's a great pick), and has to everything to do with her volatile social media presence. She uses her large following to direct angry mobs at single individuals that she doesn't agree with. Remember the whole Hercules dream casting? She's dished it out and people are simply dishing it back to her. With that said though, I don't believe any form of online harassment/bullying/etc is acceptable by any means.

Just so I can understand precisely where to correctly target my fury, we're specifically outraged that Cynthia accepted the role that was offered to her because of her heritage, which is something she cannot change or control, but NOT at the people who offered her the role.  All the responsibility of the casting falls squarely on her shoulders.  Okay.  I just want to make sure the discrimination is super duper specific and absurdly disproportionate as we fight to end this very very very very specific perceived discrimination against African Americans by discriminating black people who are not specifically African-Americans-descended-very-specific-tribes.  Don't get me wrong, discrimination is BAD.  But it can be perfectly acceptable depending on how you justify it.  It will always be BAD.  Except for when I say it's not.  Yeah, that sounds right.

I haven't followed her social media stuff, but maybe that's a better reason for avoiding this choice of casting, and you know, directing anger towards her for something she's actually done and for which she could be held as the responsible party.

By the way, why does this particular form of indignation by Writergirl28 sound so familiar?  The specificity of the justification reminds me of some other event that happened and was discussed on these boards.  Probably unrelated.  Or maybe not.

God screw all those complainers. They finally have a big movie where they got the racial casting right, ffs. Erivo is going to be having A YEAR, and she is going to be a movie star. All early reviews of hers from Widows and El Royale are all loving her.

She said yes to the role, when she says she had turned down other roles that she felt she was not right for. So she is aware that there is some space she should not inhabit. Now she doesn't say what those roles were but I will take her word for it. For the last time, non-black American actors are treated better by white Americans than black Americans. This is a known fact. This trend has been noticed by many people in the casting of good films about African Americans. And people have said that Black Americans are not qualified to play themselves. I know for a fact that is what happened here because there are literally thousands of black American actresses who would have played the role better than her. If you are not African American you need to stay out of this argument, because YOU are actually the cause of it.

Anyone can contribute to the conversation and share their opinion. That is how a message board works. If you post something, anyone can respond to what you are saying. And if you really feel that way, then you have already opened the door by speaking about white people and how they think, behave, make choices and point the finger directly to either them as a group or to someone specific (maybe me, but you weren't very clear) to specifically assign blame...even though you start off blaming Erivo directly...so you already invited non-African Americans into the conversation by doing so.
