Any questions?

writergirl28, why wouldn’t you just be happy that a film about Harriet Tubman with a world-class actress is being made?

Follow-up question: do you know what ACTING means?

Thank you for your response. I understand this makes you upset. Now you know how I feel.

If you go back and read what I wrote, I never mentioned anything about acting ability. I spoke about access and who has it and who is deemed worthy of getting it.

And saying to me that I should just be happy that a movie is being made, that's like telling someone who was never given a birthday party until they were 20, but the cake is someone else's and you don't get to cut it or eat it.

I think, black women are by definition, "woke" and you would be, in the position of having to attain "wokeness", not me. So, it would probably be impossible for me to try to be what I already am?

I don't think you can really be "woke" and nativist at the same time.

That was...a lot to unpack.

Might I suggest breaking down your otherwise stream-of-consciousness argument into coherent paragraphs to make it a bit easier for us to digest your argument?

Also, clearly you are pissed about the choice of casting, but not one part of your rant suggests any casting alternatives.

Depending on who one could suggest, then the whole argument of colorism could come into play (She's too light-skinned, too dark, etc.).

Additionally, the initial postings about the film indicate the time period they are covering, from her enslavement and escape, to helping those attain freedom pre-Civil War, so roughly from her mid-lates 20s (27) to her late 30s (38-39), so you also now have an age range.  - Erivo is 31 by the way.

This film is also being worked on and created by a team that is headed by POC (writer/director/producer), so this is being handled by the people who should rightfully be telling her story, and presumably aren't trying to do a half-assed whitewash of her life.

TBH, I'm glad you were able to get the lead out, but a little digging shows that your argument is all rage and no solutions based on assumptions for a film that doesn't even begin production until next month.

We need a war or something so the new generation actually has something to be upset about.

Who says I can't? I guess you could say that I am promoting the interests of black Americans over immigrants, however, historically, the government has actually done that. Immigrants have actually gotten laws written just for them, well, except for the Civil Rights Act, which the "native" blacks as you might say got passed in the sixties. Funny thing about that, it has actually worked better for the immigrants than the "native" people, hence the problem with promoting an "immigrant" Erivo, over a more deserving "native" person, a black American. So, I guess I could promote myself all I want, it doesn't seem to be doing any good. :shrugs: And I do seem to be "woke" about it. Don't you think so? (I'm here all night)

"Ran"t? Are you sure that's the word that you want to use, robskynyc? Maybe you'd like to use a more "femme" word?

I mean come on guys, you like Hamilton right? You are aware that Lin wrote it because African American and Hispanic actors had no roles written for them? So why is it hard to understand that when there are no roles in movies for African Americans and when one finally gets written after decades, and ti's given to a formally unknown British chick, you don't think they'd be a little pissed?

Cynthia Erivo is one letter away from an EGOT, my dude.  Formally unknown British Chick is a comical way to describe her.

Why do you care so much? Cynthia got a role good for her. Im happy for her. This sounds like a great movie. I dont think you truly care that cynthia got the role. I think you just want to complain about stuff to complain about stuff. The casting crew felt confident in Erivo. Be glad the Role isnt being played by a white person. You are literally complaing about a black actress being cast in a black role.

You cant get upset over someone literally doing their job. Shes an actress, the whole point of acting is to play something you are not. We dont know if americans tried out and she was the best. If youre an actor its already going to be a tough time getting a job.

Just stop making everything so god damn controversial. This could have easily gone in a horrible way. Again youre not woke, youre annoying. Go to bed.

She may be, but absolutely no one knows who she is, well, until this past weekend and when some of her other movies come out, namely Widows. She must really be good, huh? It's taken her about 2 years to do what it's taken Viola Davis about 20 plus years to do. But know this, she will never be as big a star as Viola.

This is just straight-up Petty Mayonnaise now.

She’s 31. Viola is in her 50s. She’s got time to have her star grow. She has the distinction of getting THREE of her performance awards for ONE role. One would think you’d be for a woman of color succeeding in the white male Hollywood game and yet somehow you seem insistent on tearing her down, and what comfort will that actually bring you?

P.S - We’re all still waiting for you to come up with a actress who can fit what YOU think Harriet Tubman should be, within the mid 20s to late 30s age range the film will cover.

And that is where you are wrong, you are making the assumption that ALL black people on the planet are the same. They are not. My history in America is vastly different than hers. So you assume that I should be happy just because another person with brown skin is working, when in reality, a racist system has engineered her hiring in order to give the impression that "native" blacks are not her equal. It is done precisely to pit brown people against each other. I'm trying to educate you by deconstructing what is going on. But, as I have seen, white privilege won't let that happen..Have a good night. - oh and the movie will be a failure just like "Detroit", "the Butler", "Selma", MLK, all black british led movies because the black American public won't support it either. Why would we support someone else telling our stories?

For the record, I have zero issue with her playing Harriet Tubman but I wouldn't refer to her getting 3/4 of the EGOT for the same role as a "distinction". The whole point of an EGOT is to celebrate a performer demonstrating the incredible variety of talents it takes to be able to win an award at the highest levels in each of those different mediums. Winning a Tony for a great performance on Broadway is terrific. Winning a Grammy cause your performance of that role was recorded and winning a Daytime Emmy cause you did a 4 minute guest shot on the Today show playing that same role as publicity for the show are real awards but hardly in the spirit of what makes an EGOT such a monumental achievement and so difficult to achieve. The EGOT obsessed on this board may choose to disagree.

I've gotta be honest, ever since the Great Comet fiasco I haven't been a fan of Cynthia Erivo. But even I have to admit that it's ludicrous to say she isn't suited for this role. She's talented and will do just fine.

All 3 of the letters are from one Broadway role that allowed for some (legal) gaming. She's not known to the general public. It's comical that you think otherwise.
