Posted: 5/19/05 at 5:59pmYou all think it will come here? Looks rather good, but it was revived in 1992, so, I don't know, what you all think? Would you want to see it? I think I would, I love the show...and Krakowski, and McGregor...

Yum, Ewan McGregor...
Who knows? I guess it depends if it's a hit. It's been 13 years, so I don't know. We'll see soon enough.

On the LaGuardia High School call board, there's a notice that their proposed production of Guys and Dolls for next year has been cancelled because of a possible Broadway revival. Thought it was interesting enough to post here.

It's a good show, but I'm not convinced it's good enought to transfer to Broadway. Jane is great in it, though, and Ewan performs nicely, but I don't really think he's the star of the show.

Ewan has definite stage presence (thank goodness), but only a servicable voice. Jane lights up the stage, as usual. The British/Brooklyn accents are a riot (on purpose i hope.) 'Sit down, your rockin' the boat' had amazing choreography--the applause went on forever. Douglas Hodge as Nathan Detroit was good, but i couldn't help but think back to Nathan Lane's star-making performance.
With Ewan, it would do well here

I'd love to see it, but I kind of doubt the show will transfer to Broadway unless its a limited engagement at a company like the ROUNDABOUT.
Most film stars "can't afford" to take a year or two from their movie career to do lengthy stage contracts.
There have been a lot of great performances in London by actors primarily known for their film work (Cate Blanchett in PLENTY being a good example) that have been announced for Broadway but almost none of them have happened.

Posted: 5/26/05 at 11:55amWasn't Meghan Mullaly originally announced for this production? Perhaps she'd be willing to appear in an American staging.
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#12
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:00pmShe wasn't ever officially announced for it but she was definitely in talks. The dates couldn't fit with her break from Will & Grace, so it didn't happen.
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#13
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:03pmRight...maybe she'd be willing to make more time to do the show in NY. I'm sure she'd want to do it.
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#14
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:03pmThe ads say 'now booking for 2006.' How could Megan ever have done that with the tv show? Was the run expanded into 2006 when she dropped out?
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#15
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:06pmWell, W & G tapes during the summer and fall and early winter. With the run just beginning this past week or so, there was no way she could have done it.
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#16
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:10pmExactly. It's possible they were trying to work something out with Will And Grace so she could have not been in every episode or something. Matt LeBlanc flew back and forth from London to LA to film Friends while filming Lost In Space, so while it would have been a titch on the cramped side, she could have maybe made it work. But then the amount of rehearsal time and the length of the run pretty much put paid to that.
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#17
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:24pmThere actually was a lot of talk that Will and Grace wouldn't return next season. Mullaly may have been considering this as an alternate plan. The show was, of course, picked up so that took her out of the show.

Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:28pmNo, it extended after talk of Mullaly joining. Apparently the stage door for this has been enormous.

Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:29pmReally? Even though there's nobody famous in the show? That's weird.
re: DONMAR Guys & Dolls...#20
Posted: 5/26/05 at 12:37pmGuys and Dolls was harder to get than Billy Elliot! My friend, god bless him, queued up at 5:00 am for the first row seats they release each morning at 10:00 am (20 seats/day @ 20 pounds each.)

You're kidding me, right?
Jane seems like she would be THE Adelaide. Mullaly, as well. Her voice seems like it would fit Adelaide, but I'll always view Meghan as Karen, first and foremost.
