I really enjoy Condon's work, and this teaser looks great.
But, I am kinda miffed how the big named stars have top billing and nowhere do we see Miss Hudson's name. "Jamie Foxx is hot right now: come see Dreamgirls!" "Remember Destiny's Child? Well Beyonce's in our movie!" And out of the cartoony girls, we don't see the stocky female. Oh well, I'm excited.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 3:23amIt's interesting that they automatically assume everyone's going to go and see this movie because Jamie Foxx is in it. Frankly, I could care less that he's in it. Jamie is a tad bit overrated, in my opinion. It is the story of "Dreamgirls" itself that I'm interested in. The story should be the selling point of this movie. Cause it's real annoying to see Jamie's and Eddie's names up there, especially since the movie is about the 3 girls, not Eddie's old ass.

Posted: 12/8/05 at 4:25amBut they have to sell it to a wider audience. Jamie, Beyonce, Eddie are recognizable names, particularly to the bread and butter youth. Dreamgirls itself, not so much. I'm sure most moviegoers will recognize the song from it being performed on American Idol countless times than any relation to any show. It's all marketing. Right now they need to stoke interest in the general audience and not just the musical theater fans. No doubt having those big names will annoy the theater fans, but if those names weren't there, I think people would be scratching their heads.

I'm tired of people using the "big name" theory as a marketing point. If the story isn't good, then it won't sell. No matter how big you are. Ask Madonna why "American Life" failed. It was a hot mess. Same goes for the many movie flops of stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Julia Roberts, Halle Berry, etc.
Using big names is just a lazy excuse for those who work in marketing that can't come up with any other ideas.
It only works sometimes.
Eddie Murphy hasn't had a hit in ages. I doubt anyone will be flocking to the theater just to see him in this.

you people nitpick and argue over the most unimportant things.
can't you just all be happy that this musical is FINALLY being filmed?
it seems most here will find any little thing to *bitch* about.
did any of you stop to realize that there are several factors involved in regards to billing?
the actors' agents/managers, etc are involved in that part of the negotiations before the actors even sign on the dotted line.
in the case of jamie foxx he has just come off a best actor oscar win for "ray", and regardless of whether you think he deserved it or not he did win and that played a big part in him receiving top billing.
this is the reality. and that's the billing. you people need to accept it. get over it and move on.
just be happy this film is getting made at all.

Marquise --- You go, baby! I agree with what you said.
I know people love to pick apart Madonna's performance in "Evita." I'm not saying they're right or wrong... but there would be NO FILM OF EVITA, PERIOD, if she had not signed on to play the part. The studio NEVER would have financed it, and they've said so.
So, you can either have a film of Evita WITH Madonna... or you can have no film at all. THOSE are your choices, not casting someone else in the part.
Same thing here with DREAMGIRLS... without Jamie Foxx, Beyonce and Eddie Murphy in place... DreamWorks could have easily pulled the plug by now. In fact, one of the only reasons Condon convinced Geffen to "green light" the film (finally, after years of trying to convince him) is because of these names he went after in key roles.
That's the reality, folks... learn to live with it... or be content never to see film versions of your favorite hit shows at a movie theatre near you.

What Akiva said -- it is interesting that Dreamworks is going to pay the licensing fees for any amateur productions of the show for the next year. Interesting marketing ploy.
Of course, we should brace ourselves for some really bad productions of DREAMGIRLS.

I said this in an earlier post, but I think it would be fantastic if DreamWorks sent somebody around for the next year with a camcorder to create a featurette for the DVD of clips from all amateur productions produced in 2006 as a result. I would LOVE to see that.
(I know it's a bit of a nightmare with gathering all the release forms of anyone on screen, but it can be done.)

Posted: 12/8/05 at 4:11pmIts an exciting era for movies. And I think you are right ...a documentary on all the dreamgirls production around the world/country would be a great idea. It will for sure connect the youth to real entertainment and not just the water down vision of it from American Idol.

Eddie Murphy's last live action film was THE HAUNTED MANSION. Opening weekend gross was $24.2 mil. Sure the film went on to underachieve over all, but that isn't too shabby as far as drawing power. Then SHREK helps keep his good will alive.
Yes, every name star has had their share of commercial disappointments to outright disasters. But would the projects in question have attracted as much attention without those names? Probably not.
In the case of DREAMGIRLS, you also have the sum being greater than their parts. Yes, there are people who are Jamie fans, Beyonce fans, Eddie fans who will go. But the *combination* of those people? Then you reach a number of people who otherwise would not be interested in them individually. And when a project is risky, such as this, people want a guarantee of at least an open. After RENT, I'm thinking it'll be hard to get another mostly-unknown cast movie musical through, at least for a while. And it's not like someone's star status means they're not talented in their own right.

Posted: 12/9/05 at 2:23amO yes, it will be a rare thing to have as many big names in a production (musical) in ...long long time. So Dreamgirls will be unique as well.

For people who are so into showbiz that they even visit a site like this, it's unbelievable how many morons troll around here.
The billing in the Dreamgirls teaser trailer has NOTHING to do with ticket sales, and nothing to do with "who's hot now", and nothing to do with any concerns about American Idol...
The billing is CONTRACTUAL. JAMIE FOXX has top billing whether you like it or not. As do BEYONCE & EDDIE MURPHY. It has NOTHING to do with how important they are to the story or whatever -- IT HAS TO DO WITH THEIR CONTRACTS. IT'S VERY SIMPLE.
