Dancap 2009 / 2010

Any idea`s on Dancap`s upcoming season post them here.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

My idea on the season contains the "left over" touring shows from Mirvish

Legally Blonde
Xanadu
In The Heights
Grease
The Wizard of Oz

An idea could be the 2008 revival of South Pacific that is announced for San Francisco and another city (that I can't remember)

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Elgin/Wintergarden: I would assume this is the only place he can do a Season, Would these shows be suitable for these theatres. How much would a Subscription Cost. He is a bit more pricey.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Well the Toronto Centre might be available...

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Given that Dancap's current season runs through the end of the calendar year (and even into 2010 a little bit), we may have a long wait before any announcements are made.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

I'm going to be totally honest, but who did Dancap think they were going to get subcribing to this season of 3 shows?

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

It's true. This season is an embarrassing follow up to the previously stellar one.

They really need to get their act together!

Fashionguru, your predictions look good on paper! I'm not ready to get my hopes up about those guesses..but one can always dream!

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Well I know that Dancap wants to keep Jersey Boys for as long as they can and it's doing really well. Dancap know has to be more selective since they've gotten the reputation of having family friendly shows. Maybe they'll have more original productions. I think that their next project is to build a theatre. That would give them a place to have as their own.

"Well the Toronto Centre might be available... "

Either.... Jersey Boys is moving to the Elgin, or it is moving out of town... what's your knowledge behind that statement?!?

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Yah, but where will the Ross Petty shows go? And Dancap doesn't own the Elgin. Also, how can you buy the Elgin but not the Winter Garden? Well, Jersey Boys isn't leaving anytime soon.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Does anyone know what Theatre Dancap will use for How the Grinch Stole Christmas?
#12

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Grinch and Anne of Green Gables are at the Elgin.

To comment on what littlebro2 said, I think Dancap would plan around Ross Petty's shows. If Dancap wants to keep Jersey Boys, then they will use the Elgin/Winter Garden and plan around Ross Petty.

I know this sounds werid, but what if Dancap used the Sony/Hummingbird/O'Keefe Centre for some of their shows? I know it was close to being closed because its so big, and nobody really wants to go there, because they can't make a good enough profit. Although Dancap would probably say the same. But I mean, that's where touring shows used to go, along with the Royal Alex

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

A couple of things:
I don't believe it was ever announced that Grinch would take the Elgin. IF Grinch was to take the Elgin, it could not work around the Petty Phanto. They are both seasonal shows - both need a theatre in the same specific time.

The Sony Centre was closed for one year of renovations. I haven't heard anything regarding the status of those renovations. I think they opened the theatre in Decemeber for some holiday concerts though.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Toronto Centre is available for Grinch. JB isn't doing great business.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Well, how about the Winter Garden? It's nice and it's as big as the Elgin. Second, The Sony Centre probably won't work. It's terrible with acoustics and Dancap hasn't ever talked about using it. Also, I wasn't aware Jersey Boys wasen't doing well. The critics loved it and both times I've went it has been packed, even with the alternate Frankie.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

I don't want to sat it, (because its such a great show, and T.O. hasn't had the best track record with sit-down production in last little while) but Grinch could *possibly* play the TCFTA. I think that the SOM wave is over as well, although it will probably run longer *I think* than JB. With that said I disagree, with canmark's comment about SOM "2+ years in London = 1+ years in Toronto."

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

I expect Mirvish is counting on replacing SOM with Priscilla, so expectations for that run don't seem to be terribly high.

As for Dancap, there where rumblings of a sony center deal, if not for the current season possibly for the next. I personally don't believe those rumors as A) I know the Sony Center is a TERRIBLE venue for theatre and B) The sources on these rumors are dubious :)

But more to the point: My money is on the Toronto Centre.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

From what I've heard- no I can't give a source, but it's reliable...

Grinch will be at the Sony Centre. Even if the TO Centre is available, Dancap will want Grinch in a theatre that is double the size capacity wise so they can double the capacity and gross, since it is a limited run.

As for Jersey Boys... I hear it's playing to smaller houses right now. It's not great, but it is certainly covering costs. Keep in mind that Dancap has a desire to be a player in the TO theatre scene, and that is always judged by length of run, not capacity. That being said, as long as this show is covering it's nut (and probably even a little longer) it will be in Toronto. How long is that? Who knows. But with the dollar at it's current level, both SOM and JB can expect a good summer.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

While the Winter Garden is nice, it's not as big as the Elgin. It's a few hundred seats less, I believe.
#19

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

The Elgin & Winter Garden have considerably different capacities.
Elgin: 1561, or 1533 with an orchestra pit
Winter Garden: 992

It was announced today that Dancap is one of the producers on Memphis (a show headed to Broadway this fall). That doesn't mean we'll see it in Toronto but it demonstrates (along with many other shows) that Dancap is serious about what they are doing.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

I read a post on the Broadway board that Legally Blonde is heading to Canada. I wonder if Dancap will try to pick it up?

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Well it isn't going to be Mirvish, so I would say yes probably Dancap.

re: Dancap 2009 / 2010

Thanks for the brilliant deduction. I was obviously not wondering if it was going to be part of Mirvish. Hence the post under the Dancap thread.
