hate each other, according to Mike Reidel and Liz Smith. Any thoughts?
My heart sank when I read that item, and it seems to lay the blame at Mr. Davis's feet for being a surly soul. There is nothing worse than having to work closely with an actor you cannot stand: you literally dread going to the theatre and it drains the joy from what should be a treasurable experience. I imagine they're counting the days until contract time rolls around.
It sure doesn't show on stage. If this is true, these guys are the ultimate professionals.
Well, it's their job. You would never let it show.

WOW. It's like WICKED all over again with the rumors and speculation. I wonder when another fellow cast member will be quoted as stating there's tension backstage.
Let's ask Gavin. He's their SON!!
I'm really finding this one hard to believe...saw the show last week, and the so called daggers were nowhere to exist. I'm gonna need confirmation from Gavin on this one :) I have a mutual friend in common with both of the gentleman and has nothing but wonderful things to say about both.
And...will Reidel ever learn to stop making bets? The Tonya Pinkins loosing dinner is probably still owed to Bernadette. And while I am not a huge fan of Miss Applegates either, and think this revival has much going against it, I honestly don't think Applegate will muck it up that much not to hit Bway!
Wow, if that is true, you'd really never guess from seeing them together. Where did you read this? I'm interested to see it.
It's in today's NY Post Reidel column

When I saw the show, there was no connection between them at all. La Cage was a huge disappointment for me.

While I don't know either actor personally, it's a shame to let 30 years of friendship go down the drain for whatever reason. I imagine ego and attitude has taken it's toll on more friendships than Carter's has little pills. Regardless if the story is true, I still like both actors - I have seen the show three times (so far) and you couldn't tell if there was the least bit of hostility coming from either one. I guess much credit is due to their acting ability to not let this "thing" interfere with their jobs. Nonetheless, it's sad to hear such news. I wish both of them well anyway.
I agree, Play. It also (if it is true) makes a difficult working environment for the other cast members, as well as the stage managers. The whole point of choosing performing as a profession is because it's fun and you have a passion for it - when something like this happens, all the fun is drained out and going to work becomes something to dread.
It's mostly sad, however, for the two people who have lost a lifelong friendship.
I agree with Bobby - they were not connected, distant, and miscast (especially Beach.) They were not a believable couple at all, and seemed to be going through the motions of the show - that's one of the reasons I hated the revival.

I saw the show and loved it. I loved it the most when the two actors were on stage, so it is very difficult to see this so called "tension". I loved the show. I thought it was so beautiful
Has anyone give a thought to the possibility that Reidel might be full of shytte?
Not really. He can't just print rampant rumours, he'd be sued.

I don't really believe the story, just that it would be a shame if true. The only "sources" that I would truly believe would be Mr Beach or Mr Davis themselves. I have met both actors separately when they were appearing in different shows and they were both everything kind and gracious to chat with me for a few minutes. I was also just thinking - what is the motivation for this "source" and what do they hope to gain by stirring up trouble?
Reidel LIVES for gossip and destroying ego's, disclosing rumours, etc. I won't lie and say I don't enjoy him...
What I don't understand is how people simply cannot believe something like this.
I have worked with people I have DETESTED. I mean, truly. Rotten human beings. Hateful. But I slap on a smile and a song and get on with my business.
My mantra that I say to myself and no one else (till this moment)is 'F*ck you, I have enough friends.'
I know, robbie. It's called ACTING.

OK---I just read that article----and it's a shame that a long-time friendship is on the outs because of personality issues. But-------OT---I was also reading about Christina Applegate and it mentioned that her voice was still weak for the stage and the author of the article was being "cute" and mentioned some named "Babbo" for the role----Who is Babbo?????
Babbo is a restaurant that Reidel is joking about, suggesting that the producer of CHARITY take him out to dinner there.
And it's FABULOUS!
I highly recommend!
Get the beefcheek ravioli.
This is news? Rumblings of problems between the two have been circulating since the show was in previews in November. In fact there were items posted on this message board concerning the issue. As far as their "long-time" friendship now in ruin; they may have met breifly more than thirty years ago, but that hardly makes them "best friends".
I'm kind of glad to hear that they're not getting along - atleast something explains the lack of chemistry on stage, and it can't just be attributed to lack of talent...
