I was just reading this:
https://www.broadwayworld.com/l.cfm?id=213409
And it reminded me of a wonderful little two-person show I saw in Arlington, Va., many years ago, called "Danny and Sylvia." I don't know if anyone else here would have had a chance to see it. This new one seems to be a different show altogether, but has Brian Childers as Danny Kaye again, and he was terrific in the role.
I don't know if, apart from him, this new show will be anything like the old, but it sounds like it'd at least be worth looking into. If anyone sees it, please report!! Thanks!

While growing up, did anyone else have trouble deciding between whether they wanted to be DANNY KAYE...or DONALD O'CONNOR???
Two great entertainers, for sure!
I'd love to see "The Kid from Brooklyn" mentioned above.
I remember seeing the movie (of the same name) years ago, in which He played a guy who was thought to be a champion professional boxer because he accidentally knocked out the real champ! Cute 40's flick!

I wanted to be either Cyd Charisse, Gwen Verdon or a young Bob Fosse (LOVE his athletic dancing style, which was lacking in his choreography).

I was going to say that, being a girl, I didn't want to be Danny Kaye growing up, but as I DID want to be Mr. Spock then that is probably not the reason
However, I was a huge Danny Kaye fan (still am), any time one of his movies would come on the TV my mother and I would make everyone else leave so we could enjoy them without any interruptions. He's probably the only thing my mother and I ever agreed on
He was such a great all around entertainer, so talented. Can't wait to see The Kid From Brooklyn when it gets to NY next year.

Posted: 5/21/08 at 11:26ami am nervous for all the gershwin-esque musicals abound this year and the next. from american in paris, to nice work if you can get it (which is also trying out in boston...). i haven't heard anything about the bandwagon/dancing in the dark production since it's out of town, sadly maybe meaning there is no future planned and now this? what a boom!

I'd say that Danny Kaye was better but they are both very good. I think Danny was one of those who no one can really copy. I'm not talking about impersonators. Some people are just so outstanding that they really do deserve to have their own place and name in history to me.
I think "Dancing.." is on the back burner now? It was posted that Beth Leavel is signing on to work for, "Minsky's", so I doubt she can do that if the other show was still set for Broadway anytime soon? Too bad because it sounded entertaining to me.

I love both Kaye and O'Connor. I always felt that Kaye was more of a bona fide "star" while O'Conner was "second banana" often. O'Conner is one of my faves and I wish he had a bigger career than he did. He was so talented.
Does anyone remember his dying words? It was like "I'd like to thank the academy for the lifetime achievement award I'll never receive" or something along those lines. I'm going to google it but the odds are someone here knows already.

Found it!
Winner of a Golden Globe and an Emmy, O'Connor never nabbed an Oscar but was able to crack wise about the omission on his deathbed: "I'd like to thank the Academy for my lifetime achievement award that I will eventually get," he said, according to his family.
I was close anyway.

Posted: 5/22/08 at 10:43amI have been in love with Danny Kaye for as long as I can remember. White Christmas is my absolute all time favorite movie. I never really wanted to BE him, just be WITH him.

I was reading the article and it said, "The Kid From Brooklyn will star Helen Hayes", and I stopped and said Whoa, interesting casting.
Then it continued. Award winner.......

MCfan -- I LOVE Danny & Sylvia!!
A very good family friend is the lyricist, and when it had a limited run in NYC, I went to see it and I just loved it. I thought it was clever, the music was great, and the chemistry between Danny and Sylvia was excellent.
I'm glad someone else knows it
