Danny LaRue in HELLO, DOLLY!

Did anyone see this 1984 London production of the show? It featured a drag dolly and very unusual orchestrations unlike the Phil Lang originals (with some horrid synth). Was it well received? I'm kinda surprised it was allowed to happen.

I never thought I could see a worse staging of the title song than the Sally Struthers version that is floating around the internet but this comes close!

This seems like it was odd casting, and I feel like Jerry Herman wouldn't have enjoyed this, as Carol Channing would still do productions after this. I remember that he has casting approval on all major productions. Anyone have insight into how Mr. Herman felt about this?

Thanks for posting that. It gets more ghastly when viewed a second time! I can't get over how she goes back up the staircase for no apparent reason 3/4 of the way through the number. And her singing????

Dreadful.  I couldn't even watch the whole clip.

I just looked up the Struthers production, out of curiosity.... Holy ****.

I also came across a high school production that is poorly staged throughout. During the "Parade" number, Dolly stands with the crowd on the sidelines watching the imaginary parade  passes before them.
