I agree with bwaylvsong.
I can't really see Gemingani either. was he an understudy for the broadway production?
#27re: David Hess out of SWEENEY TODD
Posted: 11/7/07 at 1:09pmNo. He had a role, so he couldn't have been an understudy; he was the Beadle.

Posted: 11/7/07 at 1:12pmI saw David Garry this past weekend in Boston and thought he was good. I'm having a hard time picturing Alex Gemignani in the role, but I do love his voice.

Well... What can I say.... We love Sweeney Todd in Boston
though it played almost 60% of its capacity here.. but the Colonial Theater is big.. It has 1,800+ seats.

"Alexander Gemignani has been announced as the temporary replacement for David Hess."
WHAT. I wouldn't have thought of him for the role, but I'd still love to see it.
Thanks for posting the page with the instrument breakdown, Jaystarr - really interesting to see what's changed.

I can totally picture him as Sweeney. In my head it's so awesome.
He always said it was his dream role, it's so out of the blue though so I'm sure it caught him by a little bit of a surprise. Guess the people above weren't too happy with David Garry...

I did and it was well worth it. Now where is my passport, I want to go to Toronto.

Doesn't he cover multiple parts? They probably want to keep him available in case someone else gets sick, too, as opposed to putting him on for an extended period of time. If he fills in as Sweeney, and whoever's playing the other role he covers get sick, then there's no one to cover.

I thought he was just the cover for Sweeney and Turpin? Or was it a bunch more?

Todd, Turpin, and the Beadle
According to the standby list, Edwin Cahill covers the Beadle too, but Garry is the only one listed for Todd and Turpin.

I can't imagine Alex Gemignani as Sweeney Todd..I'm sorry ! though I miss David Hess. I think David Garry did a good job, though it seems like he is not very comfortable as Sweeeney specially with blocking.
Honestly (since I was sitting at MEZZ Center) I thought he was Michael Cerveris at first and I was like... what ? He even kinda sounded like him.
Benjamin Magnuson & Lauren Molina are both great.. like their respective roles on Broadway. Though I am not really feeling Edmund Bagnell- he is a great actor but not voicewise .. he cant compare with Manoel Feliciano ( I should not be doing that..comparing OBC vs. TC)
Keith Buterbaugh was really good as Judge Turpin.
Ben Eakely as the Beadle- Oh..my ! I love him soo much...he is great..nice voice
Katrina Yaukey- as Pirelli- she's in & out of her accent.
and Ms. Judy Kaye as Ms. Lovett --she is jsut soo different from Patti Lupone. Judy kinda reminds me of Angela Lansbury ( I saw the video )
Lastly- How can you just not love Sweeney Todd? The score.. I think I read it here on another thread that they dont like John Doyle's staging... I love it soo much.. It finally focused on the beauty of the score...
I love the red light effect while pouring of the blood on the pail.... Its soo artistic.
I'm might get attacked for saying this.. but I think Sweeeny Todd was a better revival than Pajama Game ( its good too ) - but I guess I am just biased bec. I am a huge Sondheim fan (die hard)
Now I am writting something... Its finally coming to me.... I'll add more later

Another reason why I cant see Alex Gemignani as Sweeney Todd.
He spits soo much... poor Judy Kaye..she needs an umbrella onstage (just kiddin')
On a serious note : Does anyone knows if he plays intruments too ? I guess he will now.

Posted: 11/7/07 at 8:34pmCerveris was a bit of a spitter as well. And I don't think many would disagree with you that Sweeney should have gotten that Tony over the Pajama Game

Cerveris spit more than Alex ever did. (Why are people ALWAYS mentioning Alex's spit?! lol)
With Cerveris I literally got bubbles of spit that would land in my bangs and not burst for seconds. It was Eww.
edit: Alex plays the piano trumpet and guitar, and maybe more but not that I know of. I hope they bring guitar playing Sweeney back!

Actually I never saw Cerveris' shower bec. eveytime I see him ( Sweeney, Titanic , LoveMusik & so forth) .. I was sitting far like MEZZ or Balcony
Alex's shower was a bad experience for Les Mis last March. I was near the stage and he was spitting for 3 1/2 hours.. My sister (who was with me) mentioned that it was raining already. Sorry to mention that... I am a big fan of his...I just make fun of his misting

Posted: 11/7/07 at 8:44pmWhen Michael Cerveris was in King Lear earlier this year he often spit in character, which kept cracking me up.
#48re: David Hess out of SWEENEY TODD
Posted: 11/7/07 at 8:54pmUm, you know Pirelli's accent is fake, right? So it COULD potentially have been a choice.
#49re: David Hess out of SWEENEY TODD
Posted: 11/7/07 at 9:05pmGemignani can't do it for too long since he'll be doing Sunday in the Park With George soon, unless they replace him in that, which I wouldn't mind. I've seen him in Assassins and Sweeney and didn't care for him much in either. Plus his musician talents would be better utilized in Sweeney, whereas lot's of people could play the baotman in Sunday.
