I thought the award, at least in the old days, when to the writers and the producer of the album. I know first hand that for revivals ONLY the producer wins, at least that's the way it was back in the 90s."
It changed recently. So hilariously some random Hamilton actors no one knows about that might sing one song are suddenly "Grammy winners" while those that might actually deserve it (e.g., Bernadette Peters) are not."
What a silly thing. EGOT no longer has the meaning it had - just another game now, made easier and easier.

Well, if it's true, why wouldn't she?

I hate this totally unnecessary Emmy category. It used to be a real (and rare) accomplishment to score an EGOT: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. It meant a mastery in the four different media, usually for different projects. No offense to Erivo, but she is only an Oscar away from her EGOT ... for basically doing the same thing in ''The Color Purple.'' She got a Tony for performing onstage; a Grammy for recording it, and an Emmy for promoting it on ''Today.'' If they make a movie of ''Color Purple,'' Erivo could get her Oscar ... all for the same role. And if Ben Platt and his ''Dear Evan Hansen'' co-stars win the Emmy for singing on ''Today,'' Platt will be three-quarters of his way to an EGOT for doing the same thing.
To me, it cheapens the special distinction of achieving an EGOT. I imagine performers are only too happy to appear on morning and talk shows to promote their albums, movies or shows. They don't need an Emmy to entice them. ... Meantime, there ARE Emmys that are more overdue. It's time to bring back, say, Best Performance in a Variety/Sketch show. Performers from ''Saturday Night Live,'' who get to display their versatility in various skits, should not be thrown into Supporting Actor in a Comedy, to compete with those who have only one regular character to play.

So this pretend term, apparently invented by Philip Michael Thomas of Miami Vice fame and popularized by Tina Fey in 30 Rock, is now a thing we're supposed to take seriously and get annoyed about? I agree that it's silly for people to get all these awards for basically the same performance, or in the case a promotion for one, but I have trouble working up much outrage.

I don't blame her for doing it - if I were her I'd definitely do the same thing.

It was exciting the first time with Erivo, but if this is going to happenseason after season... notsure how I feel."
Why do you feel as though it’d be a bad thing if you don’t mind my asking?"
Because the awards are meant to mean something. The Grammy Award and Emmy awards have become a little bit meaningless with the current rules for many theatre actors that seem to get them from riding a wave rather than really deserving it. I do think the Tony and especially the Oscar still mean something though."
Um . . . what are they supposed to mean?"
That a performer is a lot more accomplished than Erivo is, that's for sure.
Looks like Platt is now 3/4 an EGOT. Wow.

This is absolute nonsense.

Following in the exact footsteps of Cynthia Erivo.
I don’t know if she technically gets it since they don’t list her by name.
Everything I’ve seen alludes to the fact they all won. Sure it singles Ben out, but it says the cast of Dear Evan Hansen won Emmys. A few cast members have posted about being Emmy winners. It’s confusing, but pretty sure they’re all awarded. There’s also an article on GoldDerby (maybe not the best judge) about how both Ben and Rachel are an Oscar away from an EGOT.
Did daddy help him ?
Otherwise agree...nonsense

I don’t understand the attitude reflected in the majority of posts in this thread.
First off, I found the Today Show performance particularly exciting compared to the average televised song/excerpt from a musical. I certainly don’t think it simply took a simple blocking rehearsal; someone put thought and artistry (and marketing instinct) into how to beat stage this number, particularly given how many cast members actually appeared on camera by the end of the number.
Second, don’t we want to encourage more such appearances on TV, to capture some record of these performances, and to give us more to enjoy?
Ragged Tear, if they want to acknowledge the technical achievement that went into creating that special moment on the Today Show, then those people should be winning the Emmys. Not for the folks that are really doing a 3-4 minute version of what they do 8 times a week. I don't there's a lot of notable performance achievement there that they don't already do at any other press event.
Any really, should you really achieve a landmark achievement EGOT, that can take decades to accomplish, within a year for the same performance?
