https://www.broadwayworld.com/article/Ben-Platt-and-Cast-of-DEAR-EVAN-HANSEN-Pick-Up-Daytime-Emmy-Nomination-20180321

If they win this award the entire cast will be 2/4 of the way to an EGOT. Has this ever happened to a show before, where the entire cast wins this many awards?

*Edit I now realize only RBJ and Ben Platt would be 3/4 of the way to an EGOT but that’s still pretty impressive

The entire cast? Would they all get an award or just Ben? And if they all do, only Ben and Rachel would be 3/4 of the way to an EGOT. The rest of the cast don’t have Tonys.

I look forward to everyone speculating how Platt’s father is going to try and buy him this award too.

The article says Ben Platt and the cast of Dear Evan Hansen. And your right, only Ben Platt and RBJ would be 3/4 of the way. No idea where my mind went.

The creation of this Emmy category is making EGOT prospects much more attainable for actors who land a killer role in a hit Broadway show (see: Cynthia Erivo, now probably Platt and Jones). It was exciting the first time with Erivo, but if this is going to happen season after season... not sure how I feel.

Why do you feel as though it’d be a bad thing if you don’t mind my asking?

Since the Oscar is the easiest of the bunch to win?

Because the awards are meant to mean something. The Grammy Award and Emmy awards have become a little bit meaningless with the current rules for many theatre actors that seem to get them from riding a wave rather than really deserving it. I do think the Tony and especially the Oscar still mean something though.

It's seems like a pretty ridiculous way to get an Emmy....doing a sales pitch for 4 minutes.   And I mean that as to the award itself, not their performance.  And a sales pitch is what almost all musical performances are.  To sell tickets, or a recording....whatever.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I don't understand the point or assumed prestige of an award for "Outstanding Musical Performance in a Daytime Program." Who cares?

Now that I care about most awards, but this one seems particularly pointless.

To me, it seems like an odd way to win an Emmy because the real work isn't actually created for television. As dramamama611 said, it's a promo piece. Aside from minor restaging and probably a brief blocking rehearsal, there isn't any artistic merit to these performances as opposed to, say, a full length televised stage production where every piece of stage direction is examined and reconsidered with the different medium in mind by a television director.

I'm surprised of this. And this couldn't have come at a better time. Because Costa Mesa where I live closer to has been booked this week as part of the show's tour.

Yes, I tried saying something similar, but erased it as it sounded like I was slamming DEH in particular.

I should probably know the answer to this, but when did casts of the best cast album winner actually become part of the winners?  I thought the award, at least in the old days, when to the writers and the producer of the album.  I know first hand that for revivals ONLY the producer wins, at least that's the way it was back in the 90s.

Something that I think is kind of cool out of this nomination is that the standbys are nominated too

Too bad Pasek and Paul didn’t join the chorus. Could have clinched their EGOT!
In all seriousness though - this seems like a ridiculous category. But I still hope they win. They’re a lovely group and that was a wonderful performance.

It changed recently. So hilariously some random Hamilton actors no one knows about that might sing one song are suddenly "Grammy winners" while those that might actually deserve it (e.g., Bernadette Peters) are not.

RBJ won't get the Emmy, only Platt will.

Also, I think both will lose to Common and Andra Day.... making Common 3/4 of an EGOT. At least he would be an EGOT winner by my things he has done, not just one really good and lucky project.

To demonstrate the injustice of this award, just head to Cynthia Erivo's twitter and see she describes herself as a "Tony, Grammy, Emmy Winner!!". Must have been the easiest Emmy to win in a TV actor's life.

What a silly thing.  EGOT no longer has the meaning it had - just another game now, made easier and easier.
