Defying Gravity

Posted: 7/5/06 at 11:27pmI don't know if this is something for the off topic board but I would love to hear Kelly Clarkson sing defying Gravity and No Good Deed. And Christina Aguliera sing those too.

I don't.
I think you have to have a really specific type of voice to sing those songs, and I don't think Christina Aguilera or Kelly Clarkson's voices are that type. I'm not saying that they can't sing, because they can. But it's just a very specific song for a very specific voice, and I don't think they would suit it.
Just like I think that Julia Murney's voice doesn't suit Elphaba's for those songs. She just doesn't have the TYPE of voice for it, and I love Julia Murney's voice. It just doesn't strike me as the right place for it.

I can't see Aguilera doing either, nor Kelly doing Defying Gravity. I can hear Kelly doing some kind of remix version of No Good Deed though, not that I want her to, but I just can hear it in my head.
Also, I think Julia Murney's voice fits Elphaba perfectly. She was my favorite Elphaba.

I may be one of the few who get really nerved up when Christina Aguilera sings. I kind of think she tends to butcher songs that could be SO pretty. But that's just because I really don't like those types of voices.
I'm also probably one of the few who would REALLY enjoy singers like Marin Mazzie to sing Defying Gravity. Why not? Yes she's a soprano but she's a belter and at least if someone like her sings it, there would actually be TONE. Some resinence (sp?..). Know what I mean?

Ok..let's try again.
You know those singers who are high sopranos but can belt? And belt with TONE. Singers like Maria Friedman? When they belt they have a certain tone that doesn't come out of singers like Idina Menzel. And although the PART of Elphaba does not call for one of those voices, I think it would be interesting to reform Defying Gravity into something those kind of women could sing. It would take a nice break from screamers.

Well, I still disagree. I loved Julia Murney's voice as Elphaba. She was outstanding.
And I've grown tired of Christina Aguilera's voice. I don't like her voice or her music that much anymore.

Posted: 7/6/06 at 12:54amI understand what you guys mean. I really do love Christina's voice. Really, one of the best out there, but she does SO many runs and riffs that she kind of gives you a headache. It's a shame, because she is so talented. I think one of her best performances that I've seen is when she did "Beautiful" a cappela on SNL.

Posted: 7/6/06 at 9:21amI feel that Shoshana actually had a very nice resonance on the belty top notes. Idina definetly did not, and I have yet to make up my mind on Eden...

That's funny to me. Because of the three I've seen, plus hearing many others, I think her voice fits the part best. It's so unlike Idina's or Eden's. It's much darker and mature, which I think is more the part. Instead of the screamy belty little girl thing. But just my opinion.

Posted: 7/6/06 at 12:39pmI saw Idina on Broadway and Stephanie Block on tour. After seeing Ms. Block, I decided that Idina owns the song and from here on in, I really don't want to hear it done by anyone else. Except Eden Espinosa. I would really like to see her do it.

I would never want to hear Christina Aguilera and her pretentious over-riffing on any Broadway song.
Kelly Clarkson is a different story.

I seriously respect anyone who can pull off that song, because it's amazing. I just haven't seen too much with Julia, so I haven't really had time to grow onto her part as Elphie. Although I have seen some of her acting parts in it, and I have to say she NAILS Elphie's character the best I've seen so far. I love love love Julia Murney in Wild Party, so I know I'm a fan of her voice in general.
But, I'm seeing her in LA in Wicked when it comes around in August, so I'm very excited about that, and looking forward to a different experience.
It's just the same way I reacted to Stephanie J. Block the first time I heard her...I just...really didn't like the way her voice felt for the part. Something just irked me about it. And I guess since Julia's is a little similar...meaning it's deeper than like, Idina, Sho, and Eden's voices, it threw me off.

#19re: Defying Gravity
Posted: 7/6/06 at 3:45pmI love both of them. But Christina would butcher it with riffs its true. Kelly..I'm curious honestly. But there's a fine line between screaming and belting and sometimes she sits right on that line.
"Interesting choice"

I think Kelly Clarkson could pull it off..not sure about Christina though. Even though she has a powerful voice, I'm not sure I'd like to hear 'Defying Gravity' come out of her mouth.

Posted: 7/6/06 at 5:26pmfunny that you say julias voice would not be right for it... she was the first woman to sing that song in public... she sang it at the duplex upstairs cabaret room.

#23re: Defying Gravity
Posted: 7/6/06 at 6:38pmKelly can sing and she has the potential to sing a pretty good DEFYING GRAVITY, but Aguilera has no business singing either song.
