I wouldn't say Sweeney was "snubbed" since we all knew it wouldn't get the nomination, but good for Depp!

I'm really happy for him!

Well, it didn't get snubbed as badly as "Hairspray".

Come on now, you didn't really think that Hairspray would be nominated. Do you actually think Hairspray is Oscar Material?
I mean, if we are going to say Hairspray was snubbed I could make a list of a hundred movies that also came out this year that were also snubbed.

For song. Not for anything else. I didn't really care for "Come So Far" but admittedly, it's really an obvious Oscar bait type song (no offense to it), and the Academy makes plenty of bizarre decisions.

Well do to the new rules about how studios are not allowed to send out CD Samplers to the voters anymore, I doubt that they would sit through the credits at the end of Hairspray (which isn't a major contender) to hear it.

When they can find three Best Song spaces for "Enchanted" but no room for "Come So Far" or "Ladies' Choice," yeah, it was snubbed. They were the movie's only major hope for recognition.

Oh, that's right, I forgot about that new rule.
But still, three noms for "Enchanted"? I like it / Alan Menken, but... eh.

The difference between the two films was that Enchanted had Oscar buzz around it and Hairspray didn't.
I am sure that the voters tried to see all of the films with buzz surrounding them (Enchanted for Amy Adams) and even then, they weren't able to see all the major contenders. I doubt they had time for Hairspray.

Why does the Oscar crap have to spill over onto the Broadway board?

Because this is a Broadway related board, Sweeney is an adaptation of a Broadway musical, and many people don't bother going to the pit that is the Off Topic board. You don't like it, whine to a moderator.

another erm smart remark from Foster
I think its a shame Hairspray was snubbed in Song and Costumes, but it can bask in the glory that its made a mint at the Box Office

Bluntly, Hairspray was not OSCAR worthy. ATONEMENT should have had Noms for Best Actress, ACTOR and DIRECTOR. Blanchett should not have recvd a NOM for ELIZABETH-and enough with George Clooney already. McAvoy Was Robbed!!!

Yeah, disappointing, but totally not surprising. I lost faith in the Academy years ago, though, so whatever. Good for Depp, though.

So apparently all you have to do to get an Oscar nomination is stare blankly at the camera? Go Depp. Whoo-hoo.
McAvory was totally robbed! He was brilliant in "Atonement."

If you thought a single look Depp gave in the entire film was "blank," I'm sorry, you either weren't paying attention or don't have a soul.

Well, while I adore SWEENEY and think it's deserving, it's not like an undeserving film took its spot.
THERE WILL BE BLOOD.
NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN.
ATONEMENT.
JUNO.
MICHAEL CLAYTON.
All are fine, fine films. And they had more supporters in the Academy, that's all.
If it was up to me, I'd bump CLAYTON for SWEENEY. But that's not to say CLAYTON isn't deserving. So I don't think "snubbed" is the right word.
You want to talk about a snub? Eddie Vedder. No song nominations for INTO THE WILD.

Why in the world does a by-the-numbers mediocrity like Enchanted have"Oscar Buzz"? Hairspry was twice the film that Enchanted was. No, ten times.
