Hi, I was just watching "The Producers" (which is an awesome movie by the way) and during "It's Bad Luck To say Good Luck on Opening Night" I was looking at the posters in the back, and I knew all of them except for "Destry Rides Again." Can anybody tell me what it's about? Thanks in advance.

I'm not exactly sure, but there was a western back in the 30s by that title.

Destry Rides Again was a Broadway musical in the late 50s with a score by Harold Rome. It starred Andy Griffith and Dolores Gray. It was based on the film Destry which starred Marlene Dietrich and James Stewart. I saw Destry Rides Again and thought the score and the choreography were excellent, not to mention the performances of Griffith and Gray.
"Destry Rides Again" is a musical version of the classic James Stewart and Marlene Dietrich movie. It starred Andy Griffith and fabulous Delores Gray, had a score by the vastly underappreciated Harold Rome featuring the gorgeous songs "Anyone Would Love You" and "I Say Hello", was produced by David Merrick in the late '50's.
OK, thank you so much. It sounds like fun. Is there a recording of it?

Decca Original cast album available from various Amazon dealers at around $22.00 and up...and WELL WORTH IT. Also still around in some stores.
There's the London 1982 revival as well (also on Amazon). Also old LPs by various studio casts--- but those are long gone.
Stick with the Broadway original cast --- they were brilliant.

The first thing I thought when I saw this thread was, I saw that poster on The Producers.
This is another show that needs a revival badly
I thought that was an excellent attention to detail: all teh poseters you see in teh Schubert Alley shots were shows that were playing in 1959!
DESTRY was one of those flops that ran a year yet failed to pay back. The score by Harold Rome lacks everything but noise. The dances by Micahel KIdd were supposedly phenomenal, but you can't see those on a CD. I belive the disc is now out-of-print.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com
lol- Yes, and for its opening night, they decked out the streets in full western decorations- sawdust and horse troughs and harnesses everywhere. Talk about a theme party.
I think that the "Are You Ready, Gyp Watson?" was performed on the Bell Telephone Hour and is available on Delores Gray DVD that VAI is releasing.
I've never been a fan of the score. Though Griffith is GREAT!!!

CD of the 1982 London revival still in the stores - the original Broadway cast CD is occasionally around but much harder to find -and is still best bought on Amazon for $22...not that much more than the somewhat inferior London revival CD which sells for $18 or $19 in stores.
