In a interview with New York Magazine, Neil Patrick Harris was asked this about the Tony's
Have you and the producers chosen a songwriter or team yet?
No, not yet. I tried to get Lin Manuel [Miranda] to do it again, but he’s got a show that’s moving to Broadway, Step Up, so he’s busy in rehearsal.
Is NPH confusing this with Bring It On, or is Step Up becoming a musical also....?

Here's a link to the story. And it's Tonys, no apostrophe.

Def. just confused it.
So I guess they are reworking it for Broadway? It's not just a stop on the tour?

He just confused Bring It On with Step Up. Which is a very easy thing to do...and the way things are shaping up on Broadway nowadays I wouldn't blink an eye if they even considered to make a musical version of Step Up.

There's the catch-22, Carlos. An original musical about street dance culture and competition would be a no-brainer today, but people would compare it unfavorably to Step Up, or call it a ripoff.
But an adaptation of the Step Up franchise, even in name only like Bring It On, would be hackneyed and unoriginal, and the cancer that is killing Broadway.

I guess that's what you have to deal with when one genre of performance art is essentially only represented in one work- anything else will be compared to that.
Look at percussive dance and modern tap- you can't bring it up or use it without being compared to STOMP.
It's a little more explicit with Step Up, because as a film and not a Broadway show, its profile was much higher.
That said, if they do a Step Up show, Miranda is a no-brainer if a Broadway person writes it.

Posted: 5/27/12 at 9:49pmI'm no fan of acronyms for shows, but acronyms for names? Eek. What doesn't make sense is that Neil Patrick Harris became NPH, but Lin Manuel Miranda, which is just as long, didn't become LMM.

Posted: 5/27/12 at 11:05pmThe difference is that Neil Patric Harris has pushed forward the use of NPH himself through his twitter which is @actuallyNPH. Lin Manuel Miranda doesn't push any sort of nicknames or whatnot that I have seen. So the use of NPH has sort of become Neil's "brand" thus making it acceptable.
