I squirmed a bit, too, but it's because I was with my handsy uncle.

Posted: 4/16/08 at 1:11amThat is the point of the show, the racist undertone is ment to be an over tone....Its The Whole Show, Nellie changes herself at the end to not be racist and to love him cuz she loves him...not worry about the race of the kids. And the nudity was interesting and kind of cool it really set the scene and was great with the themes of war and the relationship between soldiers and nurses....It was ment to be funny!lol

"Racy" and "racist" are not interchangeable.
And to answer the question, yes, but it should. If it didn't, I would have been disappointed. I saw it last week and I thought it was glorious. I definitely want to see it again.
I always think it's interesting when people accuse South Pacific of being a racist show; Hammerstein's work is historically known for taking on a really strong political and social consciousness, and he was very, very adamant about condemning racial and ethnic prejudices in his writing. So, while in order to show the evils of those things, you obviously need to write characters who are racist, just having characters who think that way doesn't make the entire show a racist piece. It deals with racism. It doesn't promote it.

I thought RACY is an adjective used to describe shirtless photos of guys that I post!
Considering English is not my first language. I guess.. I have a wide vocabulary!

Especially when SP comes in second to SITPWG.

Yeah, even that one threw me, Chad.
I agree that while R&H tackle difficult subject matter, the character of Bloody Mary is a big problem for me. Especially when they're obviously dealing with the issue, it's hard for me to see how they didn't realize they were making Bloody Mary's role into a Minstrel-esque charicature of a real person.
